Ferguson Looking To Storm Home In Canberra Cup

It may be the case of third time lucky for Londonderry trainer Majella Ferguson as she aims to claim her first Canberra Cup victory on Sunday with in form sprinter Electro Storm who came up with the coveted box one in this week’s final. After starting from box six in his heat last week, the son of and was gallant in defeat beaten by just over a length in 30.38 recorded by Mepunga Geordie who came up with box two again in this weeks $25,000 to the winner Group Three final.

After beginning his career with Jason Mackay, Electro Storm came to the highly successful Ferguson kennel with solid sprinting form but over the past few starts has really matured into a competitive sprinter, clocking 29.86 in a FFA win at Wentworth Park just three weeks ago and has only been unplaced once in his past nine starts. Majella was hesitant in taking the dog with her kennel already full but said she always had confidence the dog could improve.

‘I was hesitant about whether to take him or not but his been one of the most improved dogs going around. It didn’t surprise me what he run at Wenty the other week and now his made a group final’.

Even more pleasing is drawing the favourable box one especially in a group final gives the dog a great chance if he reproduces the early speed he did last week. Ferguson believes her danger lies in her competitor from last week’s heat defeat.

‘Craig (Majella’s husband) and I believe Mepunga Geordie will be hard again from box two but our dog is such a competitor, his much better in races than trials so hopefully he can camp himself behind the two if it begins better’.

Canberra is familiar territory for the Ferguson family with Smashing Amy a Canberra Cup finalist back in 2008 and Beer Assassin who broke the Canberra 530m record in his heat of the Canberra Cup in 2010 before finishing fourth in the final the following week.

It won’t be an easy task with the likes of Mepunga Geordie who comes from the very talented kennel with sensational statistics of 20 wins and 22 minor placings from 58 starts. Also in the midst of red hot form the daughter of Premier Fantasy and Mepunga Diamond recently took out the Winter Cup final at and equally as impressive has only been unplaced once from his past 14 starts. His emphatic heat win last week from box two would not raise any eyebrows if he puts in a repeat performance this week.

Pre-race favourite Moonshine Sally from box four has been the favourable choice for punters for legendary trainer who is no stranger to group racing success and her breeding speaks for itself by the late great out of Kiacatoo Pearl and her stats are equally impressive with just 8 starts for 4 wins including a best of the day 30.36 victory In her heat win last week by over 5 lengths to her nearest competitor and despite the awkward box four draw has the early speed to salute the judge the first time around in tomorrow’s final.
