Chica Destacada flew to the lead from box two and didn’t look back, recording an impressive first sectional of 5.59 and an overall time of 30.27. The daughter of Cosmic Rumble – Eluthra’s only challenger was WA chaser Star Recall who lunged late on the line, missing out on the win by neck. Linda Britton finished up with the minor placegetters, with Zelemar Fever running home strongly to finish third after finding trouble out of the boxes.
After a failed attempt at the Group Two Cannington Oaks earlier in the year, Doreen Drynan and Chica Destacada were able to go one step better, the Group One National Sprint Championship.
“I can’t believe it! Fourth time lucky!” Trainer Doreen Drynan laughed.
“Coming over for the Oaks put her in good stead for the Nationals. She is just the perfect dog, doesn’t mess her bed or dirty her kennel.”
“The big thing is that I bred her, and I am so thankful that her owner let me have her back to train.”
Since breaking onto the NSW racing scene in October last year she has had 26 starts for 11 wins and seven minor placing’s.
The 2014 National’s series was Doreen Drynan’s fourth attempt at the title and it couldn’t be more fitting to record a win with Chica Destacada, who was titled early on at the break in stage as one of the fastest dogs the breaker had broken in.
As for celebrations for the big event, the $75,000 prize is more then enough to keep the smile on Doreen’s face until she makes her way back home on Monday.
