Prior to Mantra Lad’s demolition of the 2009 Group 1 Sandown Cup, El Galo became just the second greyhound to pass $500,000 in stakes when he led all the way to win the $14,500 Dave Hodgson Memorial.
El Galo shanghaied from box six and despite being put under pressure down the back, was simply too good in winning by two lengths in 29.64.
The win was the blue superstar’s 43rd of his career, and the $10,000 winner’s cheque took his prizemoney to $502,075.
El Galo will now contest the newest race on the Australian Group racing calendar, the $58,000 Group 3 Dawson.
Should he be successful in the final on Thursday 4 June, the $40,000 first prize will take El Galo past Rapid Journey’s long standing Australian prize money record of $530,995.
