El Galo’s Adelaide Cup But Thompson “Dumps” On The People’s Champ
Superstar sprinter El Galo, Australia's best greyhound, hung on to narrowly defeat local champ Scull Murphy in a classic contest to decide the 2009 Group 1 SKY Channel Adelaide Cup final at Angle Park last Thursday night.
But instead of hailing El Galo's latest victory, all the talk post-race was about Jason Thompson's lastest public gaffe; where instead of being a gracious victor and showing a little humility, he described South Australia's best greyhound and people's champion Scull Murphy as a “dog chaser” who had “everything in his favour and still couldn't win”.
Thompson went further saying he just wanted to win the race to “stick it up the knockers”.
And in comments which are likely to get some airing and the never ending El Galo inquiry, Thompson said “we have not lost the Top Gun yet…….the dog ties up after a run and we cannot use anything to fix it now”.
El Galo's sensational box manners were on show again after he flew the traps and settled in his familiar spot out in front, but local hero Scull Murphy quickly got clear from his favourite box seven an ally he was previously unbeaten from in 10 starts.
The “Scull” chased his heart out down the back, held his ground and closed on the home turn but ran a little wider than normal on the final turn. Close to the post he put a few massive bounds but just failed to bring home the perfect result for South Australia.
A disappointed Bob Isaacson, trainer of Scull Murphy, is contemplating an Australian Cup campaign with the Scull Murphy the raising four year old has raced well in Melbourne before and seems to be in as good a form as ever.
Officials would have been delighted with not only how the race turned out but also the massive crowd that packed the course, figures on track were up about 30% in all areas.
For the record El Galo ($1.50) beat Scull Murphy ($4.50) and SA Greyhound Of The Year Quinton Bale ($20.10) third. Time for the final was 29.45 with sectional splits of 4.37 and a fast 16.65.
After the placed runners the field finished in the following order 4th Drink Driver ($16.40), 5th Proven Polly ($7.60), 6th Oval Avenue ($78.80) 7th Tashy Boy ($34.90) and Very Cool ($60.10).
El Galo is a blue dog whelped November 2005 by Where's Pedro from Roxy Reason (Malawi's Prince x Playground) raced by Seona Hood and trained by Jason Thompson he has raced 56 times for 35 wins and 15 placings, adding the Adelaide Cup's first prize of $60,000 his overall stake earnings went to $446,605.

question. in nsw a greyhound and trainer are stood down immediately when they have a positive b sample. Does this mean el galo cannot compete in this state. he has been allowed to win brisbane and adelaide cups and probably greyhound of the year but if he was trained out of nsw he would be still sitting on the side lines. Here in nsw i wasnt even allowed to compete in a bush race let alone group ones when i got a positive b sample. I think el galo is a magnificient dog but racing rules should be australia wide… Read more »

could a victorian greyhound compete in the easter egg if it were on tommorrow and they were racing under a positive b sample inquiry
