Iron Dog Trew Millions Finally Bags A Worthy Group One

It may have taken two attempts, and they had to wait until he was nearly four years of age but classy southern sprinter will head home to Melbourne with his first Race win after winning the Group One Winter Carnival Cup.

The trained performer, which is owned by her partner Denis Trewin, pounced on the field from the start rocketing out from box seven almost taking the lead into the first turn.

The Brett Lee – Chloe Jones dog sat behind leader High Earner heading into the back straight, settling third coming into the home turn behind High Earner and Dyna Forte.

But Trew Millions ($14) was too strong finding the front 50m from the winning post despite a late dash from runners up Turanza Bale ($6)and Dyna Forte ($7) who finished 0.5 x 0.75 lengths behind the winner in 30.17, which was the best of the night.

It's a well deserved Group One win for the consistent chaser, who has had a string of Group final placings including seconds in last year's Winter Carnival Cup, the Group One Brisbane Cup in December, and earlier in the year the Group One .

It's also the third time the Trewin-Womann combination has prevailed in the last six runnings of the Garrards Winter Carnival Cup including Trewly Special and .

Overwhelmed with emotion Mr Trewin accepted the trophy on behalf of the duo with Ms Womann absent from the night taking care of the rest of the pairs greyhounds at home in Victoria, where she took out five races at Warnambool on Wednesday night from just six starters.

The popular Trew Millions has earned a bevvy of fans for his consistent abilities, including an offer to buy the top sprinter for $1 million 18 months ago from overseas.

Keen followers of the dog were rewarded with value odds as well, paying well over $14 at Sportsbet, Centrebet, Sportingbet, Iasbet and Betfair.

Brisbane Greyhound Racing Club general manager said the race was a perfect ending to a top quality Winter Carnival.

“The calibre of greyhounds that we have had this Carnival has been truly ,” said Mr Gatehouse.

“Last night's race was so exciting and its great to see such an honest dog finally crack a Group One win.

“Denis (Trewin) and Tina (Womann) are fantastic people, and we are always happy to have them in Brisbane any time.”

Mr Gatehouse said the next Brisbane Group One meeting was the Sky Racing sponsored Brisbane Cup in December, and that he expected to see quite a few of last night's contestants nominated.

“While it is a few months away yet, I think that the greyhounds that raced here last night were a fantastic Group One field, and I would predict that they we will see a lot of these guys chasing the Group titles around Australia, including the Brisbane Cup.”

Behind the placegetters in the Group 1 Winter Canival Cup came (in order) Cindeen Shelby ($3.5) 4th, Paddy Bell ($37) 5th, Velocette ($3.8) 6th, High Earner ($6.8) 7th and Matching Outcome ($10) finished last .

Like many other feature races around Australia in the 90's in was sponsored by the Pet food company Eukanuba from 1994 to 1997 and its subsequent company Nutrience in 1998 and 1999. It the year 2000 the club developed the now successful Winter Carnival at the suggestion of race caller John Brasch and the race became that Carnivals major Group 1 feature the Winter Carnival Cup.
