Just How Good Is Teaman Titch?

Saturday night's 2008 Golden Easter Egg heats began with a bang for Victorian bred, owned and trained, Teaman Titch (Bombastic Shiraz x Call Me Donna). The 34kg black dog convincingly won heat 1 of “The Egg” in 30.36 after a dismal start saw him back last past the post the first time.

What transpired from there had all the punters fixing their gaze on Reg Kay's hope and current Albion Park track record holder, Made To Size (Surf Lorian x Queen Size); who had chased hard to get to 3rd place down the back straight and then ran right in to the two leaders and subsequently dropped out.

Those who have witnessed Teaman Titch's previous 4 wins or who read our 2008 Golden Easter Egg preview or who copped the tip and got on the pre-post markets to win the final at 150/1; would've have had their gaze firmly fixed on last place. This highly talented young chaser, who was punching well above his weight even contesting the Golden Easter Egg Heats at only his 7th start; picked himself up from his tardy beginning and quickly rushed forward, running inside and outside dogs though the first corner to be 5th past the 700 boxes but still many lengths from the leading trio.

From there, “The Teaman” showed his burgeoning talent to race right up to the leading division, avoiding Made To Size as she fell back though the field, and then was himslef “hung up” by the leader as he tried to get past it on the rail. From midway through the corner he had done enough to rid himself of the obstructive runners and opened up to win the heat in the respectable time of 30.36.

Having trialled the week prior at Wenty and run 30.52, the 30.36 was some improvement but when the interference is taken in to account and allowance made for a better beginning, you start to understand just how good this dog is. Noted in Victoria as a good to moderate begginer, Teaman Titch has offset some bad draws to win his races so far, including a slashing performance to take out the Group 3 2008 DDC Launching Pad Final at Sandown Park from box 6 in 29.90. If he showed just an ounce of that early pace last Saturday he would've saved 2 lengths in the run to the first section. Take in to account then he was probably cost at least another two lengths during the run, and the corrected time reads 30.08.

Compare that corrected time of 30.08 with the winning times of the other heats and it compares quite favourably : (Go Wild Teddy x Floodline) 30.35, Fawn Hustler (Typhoon Tide x Cruise) 30.13, All Caution (Collision x All Ages) 29.97, Wilodious Blues (Wilfred x Melodious Blues) 30.01, Eifell Azz ( x Miss Eiffel) 30.07, (Go Wild Teddy x My Girl Georgina) 30.18, Clair Maud (Hallucinate x I'll Get By) 29.61, (Brett Lee x Goodoo Magic) 30.08 and Roaring Lion (Stately Bird x Crazy Habit) 30.11.

Take note also that Teaman Titch was the only heat winner that wasn't up running 1st or 2nd at either the 2nd section mark or the 3rd section mark and that this was only his 7th race start. It is one thing for a young speedster to practically solo trial by leading all the way or going around just one dog to win, but rarely do young dogs have the commitment to chase, the ability and the field sense to chase down all 7 runners to win a race.

Teaman Titch was bred by The Seven Sister's Syndicate from Victoria's South West and is the product of a May 2006 mating with good race bitch Call Me Donna (Go Wild Teddy x Mystical Gem) and Bombastic Shiraz (Black Shiraz x Bombastic Blonde). On the track Call Me Donna was owned by the Seven Sister's Syndicate trained trained by Lara's Dailly brothers for the good record of 72 starts for 12 wins and 26 minor placings with total prizemoney over $40,000. She was noted for her exceptionally strong finish and amongst her better wins was a 29.99 Sandown 515m win, 34.56 win at The Meadows 600m and a 31.52 winning effort over the Ballarat 550m. She also managed a 30.48 win and several placings at Wentworth Park's 520m. Teaman Titch is from Call Me Donna's first litter to race and has encouraged trainer Dave Burnett to acquire Call Me Donna for future breeding.

Call Me Donna's dam is Mystical Gem (Phantom Fire x Mystic Sunset), who was owned in the same connections as Call Me Donna and also trained by the Dailly's. On the track Mystical Gem was a superb race bitch, facing the starter 87 times for 29 wins and 31 minor placings with an undoubted highlight being beaten only 1 1/4 lengths by Stately Bird in the Group 1 2000 Final. She boasts wins of 29.80 Sandown 515m, 30.09 Meadows 518m, 30.25 Wentworth Park 520m, 25.71 Ballarat, 31.29 Bendigo 545m, 30.13 513m, 34.65 Meadows 600m, 31.45 Ballrat 550m and 33.23 570m. As a brood bitch she has produced Modern Love (Modern Assassin x Mystical Gem), a Group 1 2006 Finalist and super fast race bitch Mystical Bree (Brett Lee x Mystical Gem), who boasts wins of 19.07 Warrnambool 332m, 19.19 Horsham 336m, Meadows 525m 30.42 and 95 starts for 25 wins, 16 seconds and 12 thirds with nearly $38,000 in prizemoney.

Just how good is Teaman Titch? He has the ability, the commitment to chase, the field sense, the raw speed and, importantly; the breeding to be 's next big star.
