Multiple group winning Queensland bitch Queen Lauryn last night acquired her fourth group race victory at Winellie Park in the Northern Territory and ran her fifth track record in the process.
Queen Lauryn was beaten a half head by fellow Queenslander Voodoo Prince at her first run at the track in the Group 3 Darwin Cup heats on Monday, with both greyhounds running under the previous track record mark. Voodoo Prince claimed the track record in 31.45.
However with an ideal draw from box 8 in the $20,000 to the winner Group 3 final and at her second run on the track, Queen Lauryn was expected to improve quickly despite still being in the middle of a seasonal condition.
Beggining well from box 8 in last nights final Queen Lauryn ($1.70) made the most of her draw and again had to beat of the improving Voodoo Prince ($7.5) who finished second behind “The Queen” withboth greyhounds again running under the track record mark.
This time it was Queen Lauryn who not only stamped her name as the 2009 Group 3 Darwin Cup winner, but also as the Winnellie Park 537m track record holder with a phenomenal run of 31.22 seconds, taking a whopping .23 of a second or almost 3.5 lengts off the record.
Queen Lauryn and Voodoo Prince gapped the rest of the field with Kallan Bale ($23.90) finishing third 7 lengths back and Uno Zephyr finishing best of the local runners back in fifth, 12 lengths from the winner.
Queen Lauryn is trained by Tony Brett from Grandchester in Queensland and she has raced 41 times for 25 wins and 10 placings with the $20,000 first prize for the Darwin Cup taking her current stake earnings to $222,025.
Last nights 2009 Group 3 Darwin Cup win is her Queen Lauryn’s fourth group race win and adds to her 2009 Group 1 Gold Cup win at Albion Park, 2008 Group 1 Sapphire Bracelet at Sandown, and the 2008 Group 2 Queensland Futurity at Albion Park. The Winnellie Park 537m track record was her fifth track record run, having gives her four current track records holding the Ipswich 530m track record (30.01), the Wentworth Park 520m track record (29.44) and the Ipswich 630m track record (34.07).
Queen Lauryn’s next assignment is to take on the Queensland National Sprint Championship heats at Albion Park next Thursday night.
