After making six group finals since he commenced race in January 2008 the closest he had come to winning was a second to kennel mate Keeko Bale in the Group 2 Traralgon Cup. But if you going win you first why not in a Group 1, in an outstanding performance in the Australian Cup he stalked champion El Galo all the way before racing to the line an easy winner.
Velocette commenced the month with a Free For All at Cranbourne in the best of the night 29.98 on the 2nd of February.
He then went to Launceston for a heat of the Cup where he finished second to Tenacious Ted becoming a reserve for the final.
Back in Melbourne he was made a reserve for the Temlee then he came out in his heat of the Australian Cup and from box one donkey licked a quality field in the second fastest time of the night 29.79.
Given a chance of upsetting the favourite in the Australian Cup final he came out well took a perfect position and the rest is history.
Velocette will take his place in the Group 2 Horsham Cup Heats tonight with the final decided on Sunday and then he will be set for the Group 1 Perth Cup followed by the Group 1 Easter Egg in early April.
Velocette is a Black dog whelped August 2006 by Bombastic Shiraz from Texan Lady (Fortress x Midnight Flirt). He is raced by Ron & Judy McCullagh and trained by Graeme Bate of Lara in Victoria. Velocette has won 16 of his 40 starts and has been placed on 10 occasions his current stake earnings stand at $221,205.
In a very competitive month Velocette edged out Group one winners, Lilley Criminal, Fedex, El Galo and Digital Magic plus Group two winners, Cool Flight, Big Moose, Bo Frazier, Gold Slammer and Vintage Octane for the monthly award.
