FOUR heats of the Group 2 WA Derby will be run at Cannington on Saturday night over the 530-metre trip, with the first two from each race qualifying for next week’s $40,000-to-the-winner final.
Our expert tipster, Brad Bugeja, has previewed each race to ensure you back plenty of winners throughout the night.
Great heat to kick off the night and it should be a stirring battle between Dyna Double One and Astronomize. I’m giving the edge to Astronomize, he is a reliable beginner and he returned to his brilliant best with a blistering 30.19 win here last week. If he steps cleanly he should be able to burn them off at the first bend and if he finds the top they won’t get past him.
Dyna Double One is clearly the fastest chaser in the series and with a clear run he wins, however from the middle pin he is going to need a lot of things to go his way. He can miss the kick at times and if he does tonight he will be giving Astronomize too big of a head start.
Berzerk comes here with strong Victorian metro form and he should give a great sight, I dont think he is quite up to the top two but he shouldn’t be too far away.
If you’re looking for some value for the place, Molfetta Boy could be the one, he is better than his recent form reads and he does race well here.
Top Four: 6 – 5 – 2 – 4
Starlight Jack is an enormous talent and he should be winning at the short odds tonight. He has scored two brilliant 490-metres wins at Mandurah in recent weeks and tonight he returns to his favourite track. There is very little speed drawn underneath him so with a clean getaway he should find the top and score quite easily.
Sitar Monelli is suited to the wide draw and he should fill the quinella spot. He will settle mid field but he is very strong in the run home and he should be able to pick off the stragglers in the run home.
Exuberant is a classy Victorian and if he handles the first corner he should be in the mix. His box manners can sometimes let him down but he does burn soon after box rise and with a clear passage he should be in the mix.
Fun Boss and Nero Bolt are both place chances, they are well drawn and if the outside division find bother they could take advantage.
Top Four: 6 – 8 – 5 – 1
Tureaud is a star chaser and if he can reproduce the effort which saw him win here in a blistering 30.10 he should be winning again. He can be a little hit or miss at box rise but he does explode once he hits the ground and with a very slow beginner on his outside he should be afforded all the breaks early. He won’t be flashy odds but he should be winning.
Silver Pierre has won three of four here and he has the good draw, he should be able to go with the favourite in the early stages but I’m expecting him to get burnt off in the middle stages. He should be good enough to hang on for the quinella spot.
West On Dossy is a run on type and he must be included in your exotic bets.
Brakani is drawn to get a nice sit just behind the speed and he can sneak into the placings.
Top Four: 3 – 1 – 4 – 2
Party Hotshot is absolutely flying at present and with a clean getaway tonight he should be winning. He has won four on the trot here and one of those wins was in a ridiculous 29.91. There are a couple of handy ones in this event but he should have their measure.
Tiggerlong Await is a super talent and he is the clear and obvious danger. Since coming across from Victoria he has scored two blistering Mandurah wins and if he brings that form here he should fill the quinella spot.
Aphorism comes here with strong NSW form and he should run a cheeky race. He should get a nice sit just behind the early lead and he is normally quite strong in the run home.
Place claims must be given to Yunderup Dozer and Downlight, both have good early speed and they could cause a few problems up front.
Top Four: 2 – 7 – 3 – 1
