Tonight’s greyhound racing action is dominated by the Geelong Gold Cup heats which are unique in Victoria as the only “cup” heats that are not seeded, graded or guarded giving every one who nominates the same chance as each other. Also tonight are 5 heats of the Group 3 The Schweppes from Mandurah, which will be well worth staying awake for.
With all this high Greyhound Racing action tonight with Greyhound Racing coming from The Gardens (New South Wales), Geelong (Victoria), Richmond (New South Wales) and selected races from Mandurah (West Australia), lets just recap betting advice for those tracks.
Geelong is considered to be a safe punting track especially over the 457m distance. The 347m starts are usually plagued by interference and terrible betting races, box 1 is an advantage and box 3 has a good record of this trip. The few 600m races run can produce good results but the short run to 1st corner has caused more than one betting plunge to go astray and does give an advantage to the box 1 runner. Over the 457m boxes 1 and 8 both share favouritism with the next most preferred draw box 7.
Richmond has always been a hot bed of greyhound betting activity, both good and bad; and it has always paid to follow educated money in most races at Richmond. The track has undergone some changes in recent years but the 535m races are generally safe betting events as most dogs will get their chance in the run. Richmond races over the 313m and 400m distances and these should be avoided as betting options. If you must bet, boxes 1 and 2 over the 313m and box 1 over the 400m journey are massive advantages. The inside 3 boxes are only slightly favoured in the 535m races and again the inside 3 boxes are slightly favoured over the longer 717m distance. Over the 618 box 1 can be an advantage with box 2 next best.
Mandurah can be a punters graveyard, the 492m distance, 647m distance and the 302m distances are corner starts and even the 405m start is only a short run before the corner. Good beginners are decidedly advantaged as are the red boxes over all 3 shorter distances. In the 302m races box 1 is a huge advantage and the same box features as prominently over the 405m, although the inside 4 boxes all perform well. Over the 492 distance box 1 is again a big advantage as is box 2. Over the 647m there is a very slight preference to the squeeze boxes, 3,4,5 and 6 but it is marginal.
2009 Group 2 Geelong Gold Cup Heat 1 – Geelong Greyhounds – Race 2 – Box 2 – Go Go Allegro
Darren McDonald has the two main chances here in Go Go Allegro and Ned’s Pedro. Ned’s Pedro has been sluggish from the boxes of late and that won’t help him tonight. Speedy beginner Go Go Allegro looks the leader and winner based on his last start 29.98 win at Sandown when leading all the way. Has an ordinary record here but have to take on last start performance.
2009 Group 2 Geelong Gold Cup Heat 2 – Geelong Greyhounds – Race 3 – Box 8 – Matching Outcome
Definitely not a fan of this dog but this field is so weak it’s difficult to find anything to beat him. Has some respectable times to his name and is locally trained by Tina Womann and Dennis Trewin. On best form should be winning but can very disappointing at times. Just can’t see any of the others beating him though.
2009 Group 2 Geelong Gold Cup Heat 3 – Geelong Greyhounds – Race 4 – Box 5 – Octane Show
Another very difficult race where the only logical winner looks under the odds and awkwardly draw. Octane Show has a good record back home in WA and has put together 2 good wins for Darren McDonald at Warragul in recent starts. Has a terrible box 5 record, but looks the only possible leader and should be able to run time based on his 23.87 Warragul time.
2009 Group 2 Geelong Gold Cup Heat 4 – Geelong Greyhounds – Race 5 – Box 2 – Our Wilbur
The Peter Giles trained Our Wilbur was a dynamite winner from box 1 back in the Bendigo Cup heats earlier this year when unheralded prior, and suspect the same might happen again tonight depsite moving out to box 2. Recent form is mixed but has started 4 times here for 2 wins and a second and a PB of 25.84. Will have to go quicker tonight but has the ability and the early pace to surprise.
2009 Group 2 Geelong Gold Cup Heat 5 – Geelong Greyhounds – Race 6 – Box 2 – Our Wilbur
Should be a great clash here with Wangaratta and Traralgon Cup winner Remo Rubik taking on the well travelled Turanza Bale. No doubt Turanza Bale is one of the better “Bales” in the country but lack of early pace could be the problem here tonight and Remo Rubik should be able to beat him off early and go too quick for him based on his 1 start for 1 win record here in 25.37.
2009 Group 2 Geelong Gold Cup Heat 6 – Geelong Greyhounds – Race 7 – Box 1 – Birthday Boy
It took him 53 starts to draw his first box 1, but has since drawn 3 in a row for a Paws Of Thunder heatr win and a third behind Dyna Lachlan last week in the semi finals. Would no doubt prefer to be racing in Sydney this week but did win the Tri Series final at this track last year before within the final of this race. Defending Champion who was well under performing for quite some time but looks to have regained a zest for racing and can use box 1 to advantage.
2009 Group 2 Geelong Gold Cup Heat 7 – Geelong Greyhounds – Race 8 – Box 7 – Cyclone Ned
Cyclone Ned is very well drawn out wide where here, especially with risky beginner Gwen Tennyson drawn to his outside. Has never started here but 2 starts ago won at Sandown from box 1 in 30.02 and has won 21 of 64 starts with 20 minors. In a very in form kennel and a dominant win here won’t surprise.
2009 Group 2 Geelong Gold Cup Heat 8 – Geelong Greyhounds – Race 9 – Box 7 – Cyclone Ned
Tardy beginner Gripen Bale will need to accelerate quickly to head off Miss Martini and Grease Monkey who will be crossing down from the outside. Gripen Bale definitely has the class edge over those 2 despite his inexperience with very good wins at Bulli in 26.16, Richmond 30.31 and Wentworth Park 30.03. Those track are a little more forgiving if you miss the kick so will be a real test for him tonight but is the only logical selection.
Richmond Greyhounds – Race 6 – Box 6 – Domino Vitali
Domino Vitali set new figures for the Bulli 515m journey last start running 28.73 from box 1 to score her 6 career win from 11 starts. Has started here twice for a win and a third but looks to be going better now. Is a Bond so can be disappointing at times but looks to benot badly boxed an should be able to cross over and lead despite box 6. They won’t catch her if that happens.
2009 Group 3 The Schweppes Heat 1 – Mandurah Greyhounds – Race 5 – Box 2 – Elma Fud
Former Queenslander Elma Fud is well drawn here in box 2 and has previously established a very good record around Albion Park before being outgraded in best 8 races every week. Will appreciate the drop in class over in WA and goes well from inside box draws.
2009 Group 3 The Schweppes Heat 2 – Mandurah Greyhounds – Race 6 – Box 7 – Swift Strike
Swift Strike is up in distance after 2 good 405m wins here at this track and has only ever started once over this distance for an unplaced effort, but does look the early leader. Has started at 29 of his 37 career starts here at Mandurah and can handle the side draw. Will get tired late so needs to get a nice break on them.
2009 Group 3 The Schweppes Heat 3 – Mandurah Greyhounds – Race 7 – Box 2 – Miss Slick
Impossible to tip against Miss Slick here despite the fact she’s started started here 3 times for 2 seconds. Last start runner up to Stoner Bale at Cannington in FFA company. Has the class edge on rivals and too good to tip against.
2009 Group 3 The Schweppes Heat 4 – Mandurah Greyhounds – Race 8 – Box 2 – Makayla’s Hope
Makayla’s Hope led throughout at her last start here last week in 22.87 over the 405m and has the pace to lead this field from box 2. Has a good record from inside box draws and has already won here in 27.66. Will go around at good odds and looks a nice risk.
2009 Group 3 The Schweppes Heat 5 – Mandurah Greyhounds – Race 9 – Box 4 – Off The Chart
Little known Off The Chart has quietly racked up 6 wins at all his 6 career starts and although this is his biggest test to date, he has won 4 starts here at Mandurah and 2 at this distance. Handles all box draws and has overcome interference and led all the way to win. PB is 27.84 and might have to go a little quicker but is on the way up and confidence is a big thing in these races.
2009 Group 3 The Schweppes Heat 6 – Mandurah Greyhounds – Race 10 – Box 1 – Flyng Shambi
Flying Shambi has started here at this distance 5 times for 4 wins and a second. She is also undefeated from box 1 draws and will give this a huge shake at odds. Won here 3 starts back in 27.75 and has run second at both her last 2 starts at Cannington, but will appreciate the return to Mandurah and the box draw.
