The Gardens racing preview, best bet & odds

The Gardens at Newcastle will play host to a rare Saturday metropolitan meeting this weekend with some cracking racing on the cards. We have 12 races set down for decision and none bigger than the second running of — the richest staying race in the country. Jack and Maree Smith won it last year with and will have a strong hand again this year. Add to that race a couple of flying 400m races, a ' race, a maiden final and some wonderful non-graded 600m and 700m races, and it is going to be one hell of a meeting. As always, we will try and find you a few winners and hopefully some at value too.

Best Bet in The 715: Palawa King (Race 12)

has always looked as though a distance career was his ultimate destiny and since stepping up from the sprints has been ultra-impressive winning both middle-distance runs and then his heat here last week. There is no reason the Smith kennel can't make it two from two in this prestigious race with this boy. We loved the way he cut to the fence, zoomed to the lead and then ran away from them in time to win his heat. That was his first full 700m race and he will be improved with that under his belt, so he'll take a power of beating.

Dangers:

Punter's Bandit has a ridiculously quick personal best around here, and if she leads and runs around that time, she may add a big to her impressive career to date. gave Punter's Bandit a start and a beating in the heats and is perfectly drawn to get a gun trail along the fence and unleash down the back straight. While the Britton team would all be better drawn on the other side of the track, they all have ability and maybe Play Nice is the best of them after his impressive win in the heats.

Best Bet at The Gardens: Nangar Nellie (Race 5)

Anyone that saw the win of last week in the heats will be on her in the final. All she wanted to do in that race was find the fence. She knocked dogs out of the way from box six and once she finally found the rail down the back straight, she absolutely destroyed them in very good time. Lo and behold, come the final and she draws the coveted inside box. Now, in the heats she missed the kick and had to work hard to find a position, so she won't want to dwell from this draw and have dogs crossing and pressuring her. However, she has speed and class on some of these, and while she might be a short-priced favourite, she is clearly the best bet on the program and a dog you can anchor your multis and quaddies through. She was half a second quicker than her kennelmate and winner of the other heat and beat her nearest rival Silver Sessions by three lengths after giving that greyhound a handy head start.

Next Best: Showman Jack (Race 8)

Jack is a very classy middle-distance dog who was the winner of this year's Country Classic 600m race at against a quality staying field. That race was worth $125,000 to Jack and it was just reward for his efforts. John Smart then bought him up here for a shot at The 715 but he just didn't quite stay the trip, running third behind . Showman Jack now goes back to his favourite box and distance. He is four wins and two placings from box one and is one second from his only 600m start here. He is the best graded dog in the race and should be saluting for his legion of fans.

Best Value: Ferocious Amigo (Race 9)

In a cracking restricted-wins race, the value looks to be hard against the inside with Ferocious Amigo for Shaun Flaherty. He had all sorts of problems in his heat but it was a true workman-like performance. He got pratted wide on the first turn and then had to work hard down the back to find a spot. When he finally found a spot he was able to charge to the fence and out-rail them to race away and hold on for a gutsy win. While it wasn't the fastest heat win, it was one of the more impressive and the box just might give him an advantage in this race — hopefully at juicy odds.
