Warrnambool Cup Night tips & value bets | Wednesday, May 4
It’s a big week at the ‘Bool – and not just for horse racing fans – as the three-day Warrnambool May Racing Carnival kicks off on Tuesday, May 3.
Greyhound racing in Victoria’s south-west has its night of nights on Wednesday with the running of the Warrnambool Cup and Warrnambool Classic.
It is the club’s feature night with thousands of racegoers sure to head over to Wannon Park after the conclusion of the horse races.
Ferdinand Boy will start favourite in the big race and is sure to attract some large bets.
Warrnambool Greyhound Racing Club president Craig Monigatti is busy preparing for a big night of action and said it was great that the event was going ahead without harsh COVID restrictions.
“It will be great to see the town full of racegoers again after two years of COVID,” he said.
“The buzz has certainly returned and we look forward to a great night of greyhound racing.”
He said each year the Warrnambool Cup seems to attract a high quality country cup field.
“Ferdinand Boy will be hard to beat in what is another quality Warrnambool Cup,” he said.
“Locally bred and owned Mepunga Mustang is in the pink and i think that is where the smart money will come from.
“Mepunga Mustang announced itself in the Aston Derby in January and if it starts well it will be right in the finish.”
Other feature races on the evening are the Members Cup over 390m, Stan Lake Memorial, and the Cup Night Match Race.
BEST BET: George’s Fancy (Race 7)
The Britton family knows how to train a stayer and Jeff has a handy one in this event. He goes OK early and with the one and the two lacking early pace, he could even lead this field. There are a couple in this who get right back and give the leaders many lengths, so George’s Fancy may be able to get a few lengths clear down the back if he stays out of trouble.

NEXT BET: Moth Rocks (Race 2)
This Phil Lenehan-trained dog has a pretty handy record with six wins from his 24 starts. He is trained locally and knows Warrnambool well. The red is clearly the one to beat, but if Moth Rocks follows it through early, we think he can match it with the favourite down the home straight.
VALUE BET: Desmonde (Race 3)
This Michael Bewley-trained greyhound can be a tad slow early, but we think he has enough talent to stay out of trouble early. The pink has a lot of early pace, so if Desmonde can get on the back of it, he might get a nice cart into the race.
