Wentworth Park tips, odds & quaddie picks | Wednesday, May 18
We are back at Wentworth Park this week with 10 races on the card. A masters race, a distance race and a nice FFA top the programme. Hopefully, we can steer you into a couple of nice winners. As always, good luck with your investments.
BEST BET: Guelph (Race 7)
This one is a very exciting 21-month-old prospect in the Mark Gatt kennels. She has only had the five career starts for three wins, and two of those have been here over this track and distance. Both of those wins here were in under 30 seconds, which shows this daughter of Dyna Double One and Portillo has a bright future ahead of her. She used box 1 to perfection when winning here two weeks ago, and with a distinct lack of pace drawn immediately to her outside, she can zip along the fence in her usual fast early section of around 5.50 seconds and race away to win this in nice time. She may even run herself a new personal best tonight. The danger is Zambidis, who is very strong; if he is within three lengths going down the back straight, he could pose a problem for Guelph.
NEXT BEST BET: Doonan (Race 9)
This is another star that resides in the kennels of Andy and Jodie Lord. We have seen him taking on all the good races during the carnival, and that culminated with a sixth in the final of the Million Dollar Chase, which was taken out by his kennel mate She's A Pearl. He has a personal best of 29.7 which was off box 8 back in February, and if he repeated that effort, would win this race by lengths. Just to be back in fourth and fifth grade means he just might find his absolute best. We have to stick with this champion; he owes us nothing and has done wonders for us recently. We tipped him a good thing Saturday night and whilst he did everything possible to get beat, he was still way too good and was pulling away on the line. He should appreciate box 4 better than box 8, as he does prefer to use the fence when able and, with the vacant box alongside, will get enough room early to position himself well enough to launch down the back straight. The danger is Suzie's Face, who has plenty of early pace and looks the leader, and if Doonan finds trouble from which he can't recover from, she might be off and gone with the prize.
BEST VALUE: Zambora Charlie (Race 4)
In an interesting race, Jodie Lord-trained Zambora Charlie looks a great each-way play. There is ample pace drawn out in boxes 5, 6 and 7, and that may well be where the market will head, which will send Charlie out at nice juicy odds. He has only had the two starts since transferring up from the Jason Thompson kennels in Victoria to the Lord kennels in NSW, and both of them were here. One of them was a slashing win coming from last early, but the time was only moderate. He should be as fit as he is going to get tonight, now three runs into his preparation, and whilst his box manners can be a problem, he does appreciate a low fence draw. He can position himself nicely at the first turn, and if they fan in front of him and he finds himself sitting second or third heading down the back straight, he will be very hard to hold out in the run to the line.
