Chevez The One To Beat In The St Leger Final At Betchoice Gardens

Champion Queensland trainer will have a busy 24 hours in NSW when he lines up Chevez in tonight's Woy Woy Poultry at Betchoice Gardens and will then have Ripped Jeans contest the Country Winnebago Auction Series Final at one night later

Chevez improved dramatically from his first look at the track last Friday, where he was relegated to third place behind No Doubt, to sizzle around the 515 metres in 29.58 and set the time standard for tonight's final in wet and windy conditions.

Brett was over the moon with the performance of the son of Hallucinate and Drunken Treasure and was even happier after drawing box eight in the $15,000 to the winner Group Three Final.
“It was a great run” said Brett after the race

“He uses plenty of the track, so he's ideally drawn on the outside”

Ripped Jeans will be an outsider in betting for the Dapto Classic, but has plenty of speed and must be respected.

Tonight, Chevez's main dangers appear to be Wayne Vanderburg's pair, Isadoll and Red Flame, who quinella'd the Group One Vic Peters Classic at at the end of October.

Isadoll, stepping out for the first time since her devastating Group One victory, led all of the way in a slick 29.68, defeating a gallant Garbanzo by only a neck.

“It was a pleasing performance” said Vanderburg

“That's first time she has been on a circle since the Vic Peters wins, so she should improve even further”.

Red Flame had to be content with a second placing in his heat after looking like he had the measure of Bralyn Midge, but the Casino chaser showed great tenacity for pull out enough to score by a half a length in 29.77.

Bralyn Midge has now won three out of four races at the track and distance, with his only defeat coming at the hands of boom pup, Winsome Gun in the Group Three Laurie Healion Memorial in August this year.

Reg Kay's Arapaho Elite grabbed Group Two Galaxy winner Big Bunga right on the line to score by the barest possible margin, a nose, in 29.77 with both first and second progressing through to the final.

This will be one of Kay's last feature events as a NSW trainer, as he signalled his intentions to return to Queensland after being based at Calga on the Central Coast for the past 18 months, in which time he has won the Group One Derby, and the Group Two and Maitland Cups.

Big Bunga's trainer Jason Mackay is no stranger to winning group races at Betchoice Gardens, with the recently retired taking out the Group Two Black Top earlier this year.

The other heat winner in 29.92 was the talented No Doubt, trained by Wendy Brown, the wife of Vice President John Brown. A litter sister to Isadoll, No Doubt has proven herself to be a quality chaser in her own right, winning 12 of 36 starts and reaching Free For All level at Wentworth Park.

Also tonight at Betchoice Gardens, charity greyhound owned by Newcastle Knights super star Aku Uate, Knights Defender, will be looking for his second win in succession after opening up his account in style last Wednesday night.

Jumping straight to the front, Knights Defender gave nothing else a chance winning by massive seven and three quarter lengths in a fast 29.92, but this week he is up against a stronger field, which includes last start winner, Dutch Daniel and the promising Rob‟s Charm which has run a slick 29.94.

Knights Defender goes around in race two, the Stake at 7.29pm AEDT, with all the prizemoney that he earns going to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter and the Hunter Surf Lifesaving Association.

Edens restaurant is open for tonight's Group Three Woy Woy Poultry St Leger Final meeting with great food at reasonable prices, right on top of the action. Bookings can be made on (02) 49515842.

The feature event, race six on the program scheduled for 8.46pm AEDT, while the first race will jump at 7.06pm AEDT.
