Capaspe Jack Wins Again On The Plumpton

Under cloudy skies with blustery winds the Werribee Coursing Club celebrated the J.N.Smith Memorial at the Werribee Racecourse. A good contingent of competitors came from the West, with places like Cundare , Warrnambool, Portland and Bolwarra being represented.

The Northern and North Western parts of the state were also represented with trainers coming from townships like Charlton, Skipton, Daisy Hill and Numurkah. There were also some new faces and this was a pleasing, especially when first time “coursers” have a winner or a runner up.

Several of the greyhounds contesting the J.N.Smith Memorial were coming off good form at their last coursing start and it looked like the event could be taken out by any of the contenders. The All Aged Mixed Stake also had some fine greyhounds to vie for the winner's purse. It's is now getting near the end of the coursing season and with the looming very quickly it's anybody's guess who will take out this coveted cup.

Campaspe Jack for Norm Walls, was too slick for his competitors in his first two courses as was Ben Divirgilio's when they made the final of the J.N. Smith Memorial. In the final Rufus Dufus was away well and easily lead by a few lengths out of the slips. At the half way mark Campaspe Jack was gaining rapidly and passed Rufus Dufus, “Jack” kept his peddle flat to the floor and took out the prize.

Where's Freddo for Alan Meyers, made it two wins from his two coursing starts when he defeated Nicole Stanley's Texas Law in the All Aged Mixed. The Wetzel's from Seymour had their team in and had great success taking out two of the finals. Their first winner was Miss Furious when she defeated Go Roo Girl who was contesting her first coursing meeting. Their other winner was Keen Contender who didn't have to contest in the final with the scratching of S.C. Payne's due to injury.

Tornado Doons had her first coursing start for the Gason family of Cundare North and took to it like a duck to water. I hope we see her again before our season is finished. Tornado Doons defeated Brian Fothergill's Apache Spur who was coursing for the first time. Murray Collyer had success with two of his charges winning their stakes, On My Behalf defeated Super Chicken in the Mixed Puppy and Pure Tonic defeated Nipa's Last in the Mixed Puppy 2 course Stake. Adda Girl defeated Annie's Merlot in the Bitch Puppy 2 course Stake and Extended Edition defeated Fire Merlot in the Dog Puppy 2 course Stake.

Next Sunday (20th September) coursing will be conducted at the Healesville Greyhound Racing Complex; the feature event is the J. Schmolling Memorial. Hopefully many of today's competitors will tell their friends what a great day coursing can be and will support the Healesville meeting and the Waterloo Cup to be conducted at Longwood on the weekend of the 3rd and 4th October.
