Westerlo Wins Chartlon’s Coursing Cup At Healesville
The Charlton Coursing Club made the call early to request that this meeting be transferred due to the severe drought conditions at Charlton. Usually they would have had some good rains by this time of the year and their track would have been in great condition.
But alas this year that has not been the case. Thankfully the Healesville Greyhound Racing Association stepped up to the plate and made their track available along with their staff, both the Charlton Coursing Club and the National Coursing Association of Victoria are extremely grateful for the gesture.
Considering that we coursed on consecutive Sundays there were quite a few new faces this week. The weather was another great day for coursing, and the egg and bacon sandwiches with a cup of coffee certainly started the day off fine for the humans of course!
The events were shared around although Tony Cortese almost made the day his own having four runners up and one winner. Nicole Stanley hailing from Portland also had a good day with two winners.
The feature event, the IGA Tormey Charlton Cup was taken out by Carol & John Westerlo's Storm Fury who set a furious pace in most of his courses. Story Fury defeated Tony Cortese's Papa Cool to take out the Charlton Cup.
This week there were two All Aged Stakes and the first one run was the Vale Of Avoca All Aged Dog, which was taken out by the Bouquet Duo's & Geoff Villinger's Head Barista who defeated Bob & Martin Baldock's En Que Are.
Nicole Stanley's bitch who was contesting her 5th event for the season won the Charlton Valley Resort All Aged Mixed, defeating Bill Van-Nes's Syonic Line in the final. Event 4 saw the running of the first of the Bitch Maidens in the Mozzies Café Bitch Maiden, Lynlea's Gift for Nicole Stanley won with Lionel Kramer's bitch Dancing Trixie running up.
The Charlton Bakery Bitch Maiden was won by Rythmic Oak with Tony Cortese's Bella Ebony running up. The Foundry Palms Dog Maiden was taken out by Tony Mills' Punch Kabam delivering a knockout blow to Steven Burke's chance of a win with his charge Sykes.
The last 4 events were all puppy events, two for the bitches and two for the dogs. Looks like it's all shaping up for great Sylvester Doyle Puppy Championship (9th & 16th August) and Derby & Oaks (5th & 6th September) both being contested at Lang Lang.
The Charlton Newsagency Bitch Puppy was taken out by S. Taylor's Storm Flight defeating Lionel Kraemer's Arbie Barbie. In Event 8 the East Charlton Hotel Bitch Puppy, Super Chicken won with Shirdon Lauryn being scratched due to Injury. Super Chicken is owned and trained by M. Williamson from Bolwarra. Must be down Portland way? This gave the Stanley/Williamson team from Portland their 3rd winner of the day.
Event 10 was taken out by M. Filomeno's ever impressive Zohan who defeated Tony Cortese's Other Brother. This is Zohan's third win from three outings. The final event of the day was the O'Connor Steel Dog puppy and Tony's Cortese's Rack It Up defeated Tony Cortese's Piccolo Boy. This event would once have been divided but with the new rule eliminating a division we saw an exciting final.
This was a most successful day and the trophy for the IGA Tormey Charlton Cup was a beautiful bronze statue of a racing greyhound. All winners received a kennel rug, and a nice bottle of wine, with the runners up winning a muzzle.
For those who had to leave home on Saturday or very early Sunday morning, next week you get to have a sleep in or at least stay home for the weekend.
Our next meeting with be at Lang Lang. This is a two weekend meeting commencing Sunday 9th August starting the meeting off with the Sylvester Doyle Puppy Championship for the puppies and for the seasoned campaigners we have the Ray Boundy Memorial and for those maiden greyhounds, who just can't seem to win their event there will be the Gippsland Cup.
These events will continue with support stakes on the following Sunday 16th August. Hopefully I'll see you there. Remember puppies are those greyhounds whelped on or after 1 March, 2007
