Crumble Monelli wins 2023 Group 2 WA Derby at Cannington

The Dave Hobby bred, owned and trained Crumble Monelli cruised to an emphatic win on Saturday night at Cannington in the 2023 2 WA Derby final.

The inaugural The Sandgroper winner at Cannington and 2023 Group 2 Birthday Cup () winner added the $40,000 to-the-winner WA Derby to his recent win in the 2023 Mandurah Derby held at Northam.

Crumble Monelli has now had 24 career starts for 18 wins and five placings earning Dave Hobby $513,630 in prizemoney with majority of that income coming through his $300,000 win in 2023 The Sandgroper slot race.

The 2023 edition of the WA Derby will go down as a breeding, owning and training success for Dave Hobby who started three dogs in the final, all from the x litter of five dogs and three bitches that has so far produced six individual winners.

Hobby started Crumble Monelli from box four, 2023 Group 1 placed Custard Monelli from box three, and 2023 Listed Mandurah Derby (Northam) placed Pudding Monelli from box seven.

But the 2023 WA Derby was over after ten metres when the -166.67 favourite with greyhound bookmakers, Crumble Monelli, easily cruised to the lead and dominated the Group 2 race, running away from the field late to win by 2.5 lengths in 30.00.

Sneaky Peaky survived a photo finish for second for trainer Gary Nelson, while Crumble Monelli's litter brother, Custard Monelli, finished third.

Crumble Monelli's dam Flake Monelli won 30 races and $199,516 as a top class stayer including wins in the 2020 Listed Middle Distance Challenge at Mandurah, and the 2020 Listed WA at Cannington.

She also made the finals of the 2020 Group 3 The Miata, and the 2020 Group 1 Galaxy both at Cannington, but never travelled out of the state having had all of her 52 starts at either Cannington or Mandurah.
