Dashing Near Record Run Has Dashing Corsair Fav To Win Ipswich Gold Cup

Suited by the small field of only five runners, notched up one of the most impressive of his forty wins going within a tenth of the standing Ipswich 520m last night.

Competing in the fourth of the five heats, the trained greyhound jumped left and collided with Another Size but manged to lead easily from box 7 and headed to the first section in a more than handy 5.43 seconds despite the interference.

Freewheeling from that point with no pressure from the other four runners and no hope of them running him down, Dashing Corsair cruised through the second mark in 13.06 and really showed his abundant strength and conviction to chase, powering home in 11.62.

The final time of 30.11 is just .10 second outside 's 30.01 track record and saw the iron dog of Queensland greyhound racing easily qualify for the $25,000 to the final winner with next fastest heat winner only managing a 30.49 win, more than six lengths slower.

The second fastest qualifier was the ex-Victorian greyhound Octane Show, who similarly made a one act affair of his heat, facing off against only four other greyhounds.

Starting from box seven for new trainer , Octane Show showed all the pace that has seen him run quick times at and The Meadows, and he quickly led to the first section in a best of night 5.35.

Untouched and untroubled the fawn flyer went within .02 second of the second sectional record running 12.97 and got home in 12.17 to stop the clock at 30.49.

Bound to be improved by the run, Octane Show remains a valid chance to upset Dashing Corsair if he can repeat his first two sectionals with traffic around him, as Dashing Corsair will almost certainly have to find a run in next weeks final.

The other heats winners were Roman Nose Best for , who led all the way from box eight in 5.41, 13.26, 30.78; Hot Drink who overcame interference on several occasions to run down Late Show Lee in 31.02; and also had to contend with trouble in the run and then took a conservative six lengths off leader Gnarley Boy to win in 30.55.

Outside the tearaway performances of Dashing Corsair and Octane Show, the run of the Michael Patterson trained He Knows Uno was as good a win as you'll see in a 2 heat. He was baulked several times early in the run, forced to race wide and then turned half sideways at the top of the back straight before making a determined run after Gnarley Boy.

Standing the leader somewhere in the vicinity of eight to ten lengths at one point in the race, He Knows Uno's corrected run home time was comparable to that of Dashing Corsair. The veteran of just thirteen career race starts and already boasting a 29.96 Albion Park win to his name, this young chaser doesn't turn two years of age until December and looks to have a very promising future.

The box draw for the $25,000 Ipswich Gold Cup final was performed trackside after the heats and has delivered Dashing Corsair a task from box six, with Octane Show and He Knows Uno looking to have drawn fairly well.
