Desmond Woolbank Fined For Procaine Positive In NSW

Greyhound on Tuesday inquired into analyst's reports that the urine sample taken from Will He Prang after that greyhound won Race 8, the Jeffkins 5th Grade Stake, 400m, run at the Betchoice Gardens meeting on Wednesday 29 June 2011, had been analysed and confirmed to contain the prohibited substance .

Evidence was taken from trainer Mr Desmond Woolbank, trainer and feed supplier Mr Graham Duggan and Australian Racing Forensic Laboratory Science Manager Dr Adam Cawley, with written evidence tendered from the Australian Racing Forensic Laboratory, the Queensland Racing Science Centre and from Sydney Pet Foods.

Evidence given through the course of the , inclusive of the relatively low level of substance reported in this sample, indicated a possibility of the report being due to consumption of meat from treated cattle.

Notwithstanding this evidence, Mr Woolbank was subsequently found guilty of a charge under GAR 83 (2) (a) in that he presented Will He Prang for the race in question other than free of in that the urine sample taken from the greyhound after the race was found to contain the prohibited substance procaine.

Mr Woolbank was subsequently fined $500. In determining penalty Stewards took into account Mr Woolbank's plea of not guilty, the nature of the substance involved, the relatively low level reported by the ARFL and previous penalties in relation to offences involving this substance. Consideration was also given to Mr Woolbank's record, which showed that this was the first time he had been before the Stewards regarding any breaches of the prohibited substance in over 17 years of training and his personal circumstances, which included his involvement with a small number of greyhounds in training as well as education of greyhounds.

Will He Prang was disqualified from the race in question and the placings amended accordingly.
