Greyhound industry shattered after ban passes through Upper House

THE New South Wales greyhound racing industry has been left outraged by the State Government's decision to pair with the Greens Party and pass a legislation through the Upper House which will see the sport banned within NSW as of July 1, 2017.

The Legislative Council met on Wednesday morning and continued through until close to midnight, with the Labor Party, the , Fishers and Farmers Party and the Christian Democrat Party forming an unlikely to fight the ban.

However, when all was said and done, the supporters of the sport didn't have the numbers on their side, with the Liberals, and Greens pairing to destroy an industry which contributes over $335 million to the state each year.

“We are angry and disappointed that this ban has been rushed through the State's Upper House,” said , Chief Executive, NSW Greyhound Breeders, Owners and Trainers' Association ().

“Opposition MPs were not even given time to read the bill before it was introduced to Parliament and the fact that this bill was presented first in the Upper House is very unusual.”

Scott was scathing of Premier 's tactic to pass the through the Upper House first, which has been touted as a method of silencing debate within the Lower House.

“This is an important issue – it should have been dealt with in the appropriate, regular manner which involves proper Parliamentary debate. We continue to ask for a fair go for our industry. I don't believe we have received a fair hearing.

“This decision, and the manner in which the Premier has forced it through the Parliament, will have far reaching implications for local communities and the agricultural sector.

“He has transferred power to animal rights organisations by his actions and people in NSW will only fully appreciate the wide spread impact of this decision in the years to come.”

Scott said the industry is refusing to lose hope, with the legislation still needing to be passed through the Lower House when Parliament resumes on Tuesday August 23.

“It is now up to the NSW National Party members and independent MPs to stand up for the rights of their constituents and to protect the wider community from the significant damage a decision to pass this through the Lower House will bring.

“Our case is also now before the Courts and our argument shows that the is not credible and it is this report that formed the basis of the Premier's decision.”

Scott condemned the 's move to fund a campaign to slander the industry using the public's money and questioned the ethics and behind using a flawed report to spread anti-racing propaganda.

“We believe that the Premier's decision to use tax payers money on an advertising campaign that promoted the data contained in this flawed report, when it has been widely shown to be wrong was a disgraceful action designed as much to convince members of Parliament as it was to confuse and mislead the community at large.

“We are firmly of the view that the many thousands of people affected by any decision to close the industry have been denied their judicial fairness by the manner in which this whole affair has been handled by the Baird government.

“We will continue to fight this decision through legal channels. It is our view that that bill should not be passed until the Supreme Court challenge and the validity of the Report on which the decision is based is determined.”

Allowing the animal activists to dictate policy is very concerning even worse when I doubt Baird cares about animals. The ramifications of this decision on horse racing, pony club, camp drafting, chicken farming, the cattle industry and eventually any agricultural activity and if AA have their way no pets or guide dogs and the only politician who seems to understand or care about country life and these ramifications and game enough to put himself right on the line is Peter Phelps what an impressive man he is if only the rest of our politicians had his intellect and decency and… Read more »

11 Aug 2016 06:33 August 11 update Good afternoon All, Late last night, the NSW Legislative Council (Upper House) passed the Greyhound Prohibition Bill 2016 without amendment. What does this mean ? The draft legislation to close the Greyhound Industry in line with Premier Baird’s announcement on July 7 was presented to members of parliament yesterday, August 10. The Bill is lengthy, and can be found here. An alternative to this Bill was presented by Reverend Fred Nile during the first reading to the Upper House, supported by Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party. Reverend Nile referred to a committee so… Read more »

uuuhhhhmmmmm, interesting concept here.

I read where BAIRD was selling off the NSW land and titles office(remember the BATHURST shut down of a rural office and 200 odd losing jobs?)

this was a architect designs competition, but the design was for ……WENTWORTH PARK.

was competitioned in 2014, when BAIRD offered to take over the WP facility from GRNSW.

someone in NSW needs to seek out in the titles office any future plans already marked for that title.

it gets interesting every day hey?

FOX JOHNSTON’S Wentworth Park apartment building, designed in association with Nettleton Tribe, has won a prestigious High Commendation award in the Future Project Residential category at the 2014 World Architecture Festival in Singapore on Friday

PLEASE NOTE THE WORDS………….”FUTURE PROJECT RESIDENTIAL PROJECT……….

if this is true,we now have evidence that MR. GOD ALMIGHTY BAIRD IS A COMPULSIVE LIAR,AND THIS GREYHOUND WELFARE ATTACK ISA CORRUPT ATTEMPT TO GAIN WENTWORTH PARK FOR DEVELOPMENT. HE JUST STATED IN PARLIAMENT TO ONE AND ALL IT WAS A GREEN BELT FOR THE PUBLIC.

dogem53  Doegem53 I have absolutely no evidence but it did cross my mind that maybe the haste to pass this legislation was because if you fail to deliver on commercial contracts especially when construction is involved there are huge, huge daily fines (running into the millions on big sites)  and maybe and once again I stress I have no evidence and I don’t want to upset anyone in the greyhound community more than they already are – it did cross my mind that the development of Wentworth Park has already been  organised behind the scenes. and if Baird failed to deliver… Read more »

Dogem now it will be Baird saying ” I had no intention of selling Wentworth Park but now I have no choice.”  Mr Grant stated in the Telegraph this morning he is not worried about losing his seat or the other national party seats because it is only a noisy minority objecting. dogem53 The land is earmarked for high rise. Labor, Shooters Party and Fred Nile put up an amendment for the land to be saved as “green space” and THE GREENS would not support it because getting rid of greyhounds was the greater good. The Greens did not want the green space, they have been calling for since Adam was a boy. Yeah right, no stitch up here.

Deborah555
