Greyhound Melbourne Cup meeting breaks new TAB turnover records

Wagering on last Friday night's TAB Melbourne Cup meeting at Sandown Park, eclipsed all records, reaching a new benchmark of $7.5 million in national turnover.

The meeting, which featured the world's greatest greyhound race, the $630,000 Group 1 TAB Melbourne Cup set a new record for wagering on a greyhound race meeting in Australia.

With $1 million in prizemoney on offer across a revamped 12 race program, the very best greyhounds from across Australia were on show, with the Melbourne Cup taken home by My Redeemer, providing trainer David Geall with his first win in Australia's pinnacle greyhound race.

The outstanding wagering results demonstrate the strength of public interest in Victorian greyhound racing, smashing the record for the single biggest turnover on a greyhound meeting in Australian history. This year's turnover was almost $2 million higher than last year's $5.55 million, a 35 per cent increase, and 34 per cent higher than the previous record of $5.61 million set in 2016.

The high-quality field in the Cup produced a 40 per cent year-on-year increase in wagering turnover on the race, with more than $1.4 million wagered nationally on the group 1 event.

The record for the highest TAB quaddie pool for a greyhound meeting, also feel on the night, with the SuperTAB pool eclipsing $1 million for the first time.

Victorian greyhound racing is currently experiencing a period of significant growth with interest and wagering from punters around Australia.
