Volunteers wanted for Greyhound Industry Animal Welfare Committee
The head of the NSW Greyhound Welfare & Integrity Commission (GWIC) is inviting expressions of interest (EOI) for the role of the greyhound racing industry representative on the Greyhound Industry Animal Welfare Committee.
Chief Commissioner Alan Brown AM said the Greyhound Industry Animal Welfare Committee provides valuable advice to the GWIC on matters relating to the welfare of greyhounds, including the formulation of welfare policies and standards.
“The members of the Committee devoted much time and thought to the development of a proposed Code of Practice for the Welfare of Greyhounds,” Commissioner Brown said.
“Topics that have been addressed by the Committee include strategies to reduce the incidence and severity of race-related injuries in greyhounds, animal welfare standards for special events such as the Million Dollar Chase, hydration policies, ear branding, rehoming programs and the socialisation of greyhound puppies to increase opportunities for rehoming.
“I would like to thank both current and past members for their commitment and contribution to the committee.”
The Greyhound Industry Animal Welfare Committee was established in 2017 under the Greyhound Racing Act.
It has five members including an expert in the area of animal welfare or behaviour, an officer of the RSPCA, the NSW Chief Veterinary Officer or nominee, a nominee of Greyhound Racing NSW and a representative of the greyhound racing industry.
The committee meets four times a year, or more often if required.
Expressions of interest are invited from persons who are interested in appointment as the representative of the greyhound racing industry. The appointment period will be two years.
“Expressions of interest are encouraged from people who are registered with the Commission as a greyhound racing industry participant or who otherwise have knowledge and expertise about the industry,” Mr Brown said.
“If you are committed to developing and supporting changes to the industry that will improve greyhound welfare, please submit your expression of interest by Tuesday, 5 May 2020.”
