Happy Haswell Too Strong In The 2014 Ipswich Young Guns
Boom Queensland youngster Happy Haswell continued on his winning ways by taking out the 2014 Racing Queensland Young Guns at Ipswich on Tuesday afternoon.
The Reg Kay trained son of Surf Lorian and Teenage Dream (Knocka Norris – Size ‘Em Up) had to dig deep in the run home to secure the 1 1/4 length victory in the time of 30.62 en route to collecting the $10,080 winners cheque.
After being sent out an odds-on favourite from box four, the 31kg blue dog was only fourth away from the traps as You Say So (7) carved across from the outside and sped away in front. By the first turn, Happy Haswell had made his way to second placing out wide on the track.
You Say So had a six length ascendency on Happy Haswell as they headed into the back straight and it looked as though the favourite had his work cut out for him a long way from home. Californian Dude (1) was in third, another three lengths astern of Happy Haswell.
You Say So maintained a four length break around the home turn and looked as though he may be going to pinch the race, but as soon as they straightened for home, Happy Haswell put on the after-burners.
He devoured You Say So’s leading margin in the twinkling of an eye and raced away to score an imperious win. You Say So was far from disgraced in second placing with little else making ground on the pair. Californian Dude finished a further 5 1/2 lengths away to claim third place.
The win was Happy Haswell’s ninth from just 12 career starts and pushes his earnings beyond $32,000. It would be no surprise if we hear a lot more of this greyhound in the coming year.
