Hobart Thousand 2024 heats preview: Stars clash in Tasmania

The stage is set for a thrilling weekend of greyhound racing as the heats for the prestigious Group 1 Hobart Thousand kick off on Thursday night.

With its deep history as Australia’s oldest greyhound race, the remains a coveted prize, now offering $100,000 to the winner in its 2024 edition.

The seven heats, run over 461 metres at Ladbrokes Park Hobart, have drawn 52 of the nation’s top sprinters, including an exciting mix of local talent and interstate stars.

Each heat winner, along with the fastest runner-up, will progress to next week’s Hobart Thousand final set for December 12.

Local hero Bernie Burrow, trained by Mick Stringer, headlines the opening heat.

  • Fresh from victories in the Tasmanian and the Barry Heawood Hobart Thousand Prelude, Bernie Burrow has been installed as the $1.70 favourite with the top online bookmakers and is currently $7 in the outright betting odds at Neds.

    Stringer, who won this race in 2008 with Little Spaniard, is confident in his charge’s momentum but acknowledges the challenge posed by Million Dollar Chase finalist Inconspicuous, drawn in box seven.

    Trainer Brendan Pursell brings a formidable two-pronged assault from Victoria with Serial Sticker and King Owen.

    Serial Sticker, the $1.75 BlondeBet favourite in the sixth heat, will face a showdown against David Geall’s Aston Fantastic, a Group 1 veteran with 26 career wins.

    Meanwhile, King Owen’s strength will be tested in the fifth heat against Tasmania’s Raider’s Guide, who is currently the $2.25 Picklebet favourite and Warrnambool Cup winner Matt Loch.

    Adding to the intrigue, Group 1 champion Flying Zulu enters the seventh and final heat from box three as a $1.60 heavy favourite at PlayUp.

    Trained by Jason Thompson, the seasoned campaigner faces stiff opposition from Orli Bale and Rojo Diamond.

    Other notable contenders include Ducati Roy, aiming to improve on his third-place finish in last year’s Hobart Thousand, and , whose recent 25.57-second trial positions him as a major threat.
