Jason Mackay’s Megan Keeping Looks a Keeper

TRAINER has Megan Keeping humming, with the black bitch setting the time standard going into the New Year's Gift final at on Thursday (January 8).

She won the first of four heats in an impressive 22.31 seconds at her Maitland debut last Thursday and her sectionals were brilliant, with a second split of 15.72 and a flying run home of 6.59.

Starting $1.80 favourite, she didn't disappoint her supporters as she exploded mid-race to beat the Ron Herbert-trained Foxy Rogan by five-and-a-half lengths, with the Robert Groizard Jr-trained Grin Diddle third.

This Thursday she is set to sizzle around the track and could even break her personal best time, with Mackay extremely excited about her chances.

“Megan Keeping has box eight on Thursday at Maitland,” Mackay said.

“She is perfectly boxed and with a faster start this week she will improve her time.”

The latest victory brought her career record to six wins, two seconds and a third from 13 race starts, earning her an impressive reputation.

Megan Keeping is owned by ‘Race A Chaser' syndications which forms a part of Racemedia, the same company that owns Australian Racing Greyhound. Shares are still available to be purchased in Megan Keeping at $1500* per 5% share.

Originally trained in by before venturing south for a stint in Victoria, the daughter of Indigo Gem and came to Mackay's kennels in October and had her first start for him in early December, winning by 12.75 lengths at .

With her exciting record, Megan Keeping is emerging as a top-class greyhound and has the added edge that she can still participate in many of the female age-restricted classic races.

With a second placing at over 520 metres, Megan Keeping has shown enough promise to suggest she could target races over 500 metres.

Mackay's aim is to ensure her race fitness continues to improve and said he would test out whether she had the ability to develop into a city-class 500m performer next week when he puts her in over the tough 450 metres at Maitland.

“We will see how she goes and then go from there,” he said.

For now, the focus is Thursday's $1500-to-the-winner feature.

Megan Keeping will be up against the likes of the Ian Betts-trained Fredys Flash (box four) and Miss Migaro (box two) for Sawyer's Gully trainer Warwick Brown.

The New Year's Gift Final is race seven on the card at Maitland this Thursday and will jump at 5.50pm AEDT.

$1500 for a 5% share? Of a greyhound? :-/
Is that a misprint?

No it wouldn’t be a misprint. $1500 for a 5% share works out to be a market value of $30k. It is a performed greyhound after all, not an untried pup.

Being trained for 50% I assume. Not something I would get involved with. But good luck to anyone who does, no doubt you will all have a ball, nothing beats the excitement of winning!
