Melbourne Storm & Australian Bloodstock join The Phoenix race
The Phoenix slot race, to be held at The Meadows on December 21, 2024, has announced the names of its eight slot holders for this year’s edition of the world’s richest greyhound race.
The Melbourne Storm, from the NRL, and Australian thoroughbred racing’s Australian Bloodstock are both set to become new slot holders for The Phoenix.
Other participants, in the slot include Ladbrokes Racing Club and Sportsbet, along with existing slots holders Racing Queensland and Total Container Solutions.
Joining them will be new slot holders from Awesome Lodge and Aaron Bain Racing.
This year’s Phoenix race will present a prize pool totalling $1,650,000, with the victorious slot holder taking a $1,000,000 first prize with their greyhound.
Each slot will cost the holder $100,000 to acquire, and slot owners now have a period of ninety days to select a greyhound to compete in the 525 metre race on their behalf.
The inaugural Phoenix event took place in 2020.
The race has swiftly risen to prominence as a competition within the realm of greyhound racing due to the the prizemoney on offer, and conjecture around which greyhounds will be selected to race for each slot holder.
The decision to purchase a slot for themselves (Awesome Lodge) in their own right seems logical given how highly sought-after Jason Thompson Kennel has been in previous editions.
The contest welcomes greyhound participants regardless of age and skill level while entrusting slot owners with the task of selecting and preparing their canine contenders for the race.
