Tonk is the 2014 Group One Golden Easter Egg winner. The fawn dog by Bartrim Bale – Coulta Gold (Bombastic Shiraz – Coulta Tess) was crowned the champion on Saturday night at Wentworth Park after drawing away to score by four and a quarter lengths in 29.62 for trainer Brooke Ennis. Ennis also put the polish on third placegetter, Warrior King.
After the dogs passed the post the first time, race favourite Buckle Up Wes (1) looked the goods as he held the rails advantage over lid pinger Magic Display (5). However, as the field approached the first turn, the race changed complexion. Buckle Up Wes elected to run-off and in the process hampered Magic Display, who never gave up trying to take the lead. Tonk made the most of this opportunity to dive into the gap that was created along the rail and zoom to the lead.
Buckle Up Wes checked off the back of Magic Display and fell back into fifth position. Down the back straight, the Andrea Dailly trained Hawk Alone (8) who showed pace from box eight, worked his way around the outside of the field to take up second position. Warrior King (4) showed great tenacity to hunt along the rails and work himself into third. After that, the placegetters positions didn’t change, with two and a quarter lengths separating Hawk Alone and Warrior King for second and third. Buckle Up Wes battled on gamely for fourth.
Of the others, Ollie Bale (3) got jammed early and was dragged down before the post the first time and then got checked to a clear last around the turn and that’s where he stayed. Evil Punk (6) checked off Warrior King in the early stages and wasn’t able to lead, finishing fifth. He was also forced wide around the turn. Jordan Allen (7) was slow away and was the widest of the runners rounding the first turn and finished sixth. Magic Display wound up in seventh.
The Easter Egg win is Tonk’s first Group One victory and he pockets connections $250,000 for his efforts.
