Today the NSW Greyhound Welfare & Integrity Commission (GWIC) announced the appointment of Mr Brett Day, current Chief Steward of Harness Racing Victoria, to the role of Manager, Race Day Operations (Chief Steward). Mr Day’s appointment follows the recent retirement of Ms Gail Thorsby.
“Mr Day’s appointment is an important and significant one for the Commission, who will lead a range of improvements and enhancements to its stewarding of race meetings in New South Wales,” Chief Executive Officer Ms Judy Lind said.
“Mr Day has substantial stewarding expertise and experience in both the thoroughbred and harness racing industries, and he will be a very valuable asset to the Commission and to greyhound racing in New South Wales.”
Mr Day has been the Chief Steward for Harness Racing Victoria since June 2018 having been with HRV since 2011. Prior to his employment at HRV, Mr Day performed stewarding functions in thoroughbreds in Queensland and New South Wales.
“I’m looking forward to taking up the role at the Commission as I see it as a great opportunity to implement a range of changes that will see it as one of the leading racing and integrity controlling bodies in the country”, Mr Day said.
Mr Day’s appointment comes after the retirement of Chief Steward Gail Thorsby and Ms Judy Lind, was quick to wish her the very best in her retirement.
“Gail has done a tremendous job leading the steward panel since November 2018 and has been well respected by the industry throughout her time with the Commission,” Ms Lind said.
The Commission wishes Gail all the best in her retirement.
Mr Day will commence in the role in early September.
