Gold Slammer Gets A Well Earned Retirement

Jamie McFarlane announced the retirement of grand old stayer after he finished fourth at Wentworth Park last Saturday October 24.

Gold Slammer (July 05 red fawn dog x Rachael Anne) competed in a grade 4/5 over the 720 finishing very strongly when the race was all over, coming from a long way back after a slow start.

Jamie said Gold Slammer deserved his retirement after a long and fruitful career.

Before the race Jamie said Saturday’s run would be his last. “Irrespective of the result he has earned his retirement,” he said.

“He will have a good home and be spoilt by Cheryl Fleming, whose late husband John trained Gold Slammer for the majority of his long career.”

Gold Slammer’s last race was his 100th start for a life time record of 16-25-13 (WP 57 11-16-7 including 55 over the 720) outstanding by any reckoning.

A highlight was his win in the 2009 Cup on February 14 at a time when was unable to continue training due to serious illness, handing over the collar and lead to Jamie.

John lived to experience the joy of seeing Gold Slammer win the Group 2 shortly before he passed away. Owners Heather and were on hand last Saturday for their grand old performer’s final race and a special presentation was made on the night by the club to the connections.
