Grand Canyon Resumes With A Casino Best Effort

The very consistent Grand Canyon continued on his winning way to set the time standard of 22.95 when racing resumed at Queen Elizabeth Park last Friday.

Beginning fast with the speedy Mystical Mandy, Grand Canyon was able to bullock his way to the front and set up a winning break as they went down the back of the track.

Chasing hard to the wire, he held his advantage to score by 3 1/2 lengths. Trainer Matthew Reid has this fellow going “great guns” at present with three wins form his last four starts.

Five heats of a Blue Paws 5th grade series were held, and strangely enough three of the winners came from box six. Fastest qualifier Mudgee Man was most impressive racing away in the back straight to run 23.10 for Trevor Salmoni. Trevor has two runners in this week’s rich final with Forceful Harry getting through with a second to Bralyn Sal who scored for Brad Northfield. She ran 23.17 after leading all of the way. Brad will also rug up two runners as Bralyn Shorty scored well in his “run off”. He got a big break down the back and won by two lengths in 23.35.

Mecca Magic came out running to win her heat in a fast 23.15 for Jan Finneran and the Casey family, whilst Surfer Richie got home hard along the fence to run 23.66 for Garry Cluss. The final should be a great spectacle with the box draw perhaps deciding the winner.

Charlie and Toni Northfield were also in the limelight with two winners on the day. Kingsbrae Dust overcame the dreaded five box to lead all of the way in the Royal Hotel maiden hanging on by a 1/2 length in 23.64, and the well bred Ink Pot was never headed when she took out the Mc Donald’s Pharmacy maiden over 484 metres, saluting by 2 1/4 lengths in 27.97.

Miss Sterling got to the lead at the first bend to race away with the Richmond Valley Pet Supplies stake winning by 5 3/4 lengths in 27.59 for Rob Andrews, while that Northfield name appeared again when Glen trained the staying race winner, Hippy Free Love. She took the lead going into the back and held on to get in by a 1/2 length in 36.39.

The well performed Thanos made it nine wins fom twenty starts when he ran the fastest over the 484 metres – 27.41 for Darren Russell, and Max Rose Hi won the opening maiden in 23.36 for Trevor Thompson.

TAB racing will continue at Casino next Friday with another twelve event card.
