Greens MP John Kaye calls for suspension of greyhound racing

DESPITE NSW Racing Minister Troy Grant announcing the board and CEO of Greyhound had stood down overnight, Greens NSW MP and racing spokesperson John Kaye has called for an suspension of all greyhound racing.

Kaye welcomed Grant's removal of the and the admission self-regulation of the industry has failed, but said anything short of stopping all races would fail to prevent participants from profiting from alleged live-baiting activities.

“By refusing to suspend all greyhound races, Minister Grant is failing to stop the flow of blood money,” Kaye explained.

“He is allowing trainers and owners that have live-baited their dogs to continue to profit from their extreme cruelty.

“The live-baiting scandal goes beyond the handful of trainers exposed by ABC TV Four Corners. Any money now bet and won on a greyhound race has almost certainly been corrupted by live baiting.

“Trainers live-bait their dogs to give them a winning edge. All races must be suspended to stop these participants profiting from their unconscionable behaviour and the opportunity for any incentive for the practice to continue.”

Kaye said further investments were required to ensure greyhounds were properly catered for should there be a suspension of racing.

“Urgent action is needed to protect the welfare of the dogs whose owners and trainers have been caught live baiting,” he said.

“Disqualified from racing, these dogs face a bleak future.

“As a matter of urgency the Minister must direct the government- CEO to allocate existing industry funds to rehabilitate and rehome dogs that have been brutalised by live baiting.

“If the Minister fails to prioritise the rehoming of dogs that have been blooded, he is perpetuating the crisis.

“Greyhounds are typically gentle and friendly companions. It is criminal that GRNSW has allowed participants to train these dogs to maul defenceless animals in a despicable grab for greater profits.”

Kaye also commented on the announcement of a new taskforce, to investigate training methods used in NSW and to supervise the running of trial tracks and training establishments.

The taskforce is also set to ensure that GRNSW and other agencies, such as NSW, are powerful enough to fully investigate any alleged animal welfare issues within the sport.

The taskforce will be headed by former High Court justice and eminent legal practitioner Michael McHugh AC, QC.

“Minister Grant's new should be open and accountable, in stark contrast to the body it is investigating,” Kaye said.

“The terms of reference would be published and the hearings should be open to the public wherever possible.

“It is critical that the consults with the organisations whose and commitment to animal welfare exposed the abhorrent practices.”

The thing is Louise Ann Dittrich, dogs are breed to chase and catch prey,it is why they chase. The problem started wen the Greyhound Boards of Australia, decided that they didnt want even aHumanly killed Rabbit on the arm at trial tracks, Because it wasn’t a Nice look!!!!!!Bloody Idiots, I mean to say, the only people generally at race track trials are Greyhound People!!!You aren’t even allowed to put a rabbit that has been killed by a car on the Arm.So dogs now chase a stuffed toy!! Wif a squeaker in it, which many dogs have NO interest in. So… Read more »

All Greys have prey drive they are hunting dogs … It’s the greedy owners who live bait or blood their pups n dogs to make then chase hard that need removing from the sport permanently … Time for Greyhound racing to enter the 21sr century or face a huge slump and revenue downturn at the tracks n TAB

I think that’s a fair call. But as I say their is no outcry on Mexamatoese,Mass Poisoning and a Terrible Death, Nor is there a outcry on pig dogs.Presumably cos the pigs are running in the wild and have a Sporting Chance against 4 dogs?

I’ve owned ex racer/ breeding bitch (drakette) … Had one of her pups broken in but dropped monkey muscle wouldn’t heal … I’ve fostered adoption greys for GRV … Taken “You Idiot” (the footy show race dog in the 90s) to local shows to promote greyhounds as pets etc … That was about 15 year ago now … I love the animal the athleticism the visual spectacle but not the abuse behind the scenes ignored by the regulators of this industry

What are you talking about? i’m talking about the thousands of track staff, stewards, office staff, secretaries, security, bar staff, journalists, etc etc. Please try and be factual instead of acting like a fool. I already made clear in my statement that the majority of employees i’m talking about are not trainers. There are 30,000 people employed nationally in and surrounding the greyhound industry that haven’t done anything wrong. There are also a vast majority of trainer that do no engage in these disgusting practices and also find homes for their dogs regardless of whether they were good enough to… Read more »

Do you know what I think is funny? I’m not hearing anyone baying for the blood of the ‘cheaters’. I’m not hearing anyone demanding the money returned. I’m not seeing any outrage at the deceit of these supposed ‘rogue’ trainers. That tells me you all knew about it. This is why this industry needs to be shut down. Cause not a single one of you ‘appears’ to be trustworthy. I could have bought the ‘we love our animals’ bullshit. Till I saw this video.

Paul Rehmann

How are you not hearing that? We are all baying for the blood of those trainers, that behavior was sick and abhorrent, i’m not sorry they got caught, i’m sorry that they were sick enough to do this thing, its completely unforgivable and if you look around you will see that people inside the industry are just as outraged as you are and justifiably so. No animals should ever go though such horror and torture, and likewise no greyhound should ever be put down for being slow. Greyhounds do not need kills, they are site hounds that just love running.… Read more »
