The Board’s decision follows an extensive process which commenced in February this year.
The decision was made after the Board considered advice from Deloitte, who has been administering the affairs of the NCA since February this year. The Board also considered representations from the NCA, as well as other relevant information.
The Board formed the view that the NCA is not, or will not be, financially viable in relation to participation in the greyhound racing industry and in any event that it would be in the best interests of the greyhound racing industry to cancel the NCA’s registration as a greyhound racing club.
Racing and operations at The Gardens will continue unaffected, with the Greyhound Breeders, Owners and Trainers Association (GBOTA) to conduct race meetings on an interim basis up until 31 December 2013. The current race programming and trialling arrangements will continue.
GRNSW Chairman Eve McGregor said the decision to cancel the NCA’s registration was a most difficult one for the Board to make given the extensive history of the NCA. However, the Board has acted in the best interests of The Gardens complex and the sport as a whole, which had to be preserved above the interests of the NCA alone.
“The Gardens is – and will continue to be – a key venue for greyhound racing in NSW that is due to stage more than 120 TAB meetings and be utilised by thousands of participants and fans of the sport in the 2013/14 racing season,” Ms McGregor said.
“GRNSW is committed to having a long term operator in place by 1 January 2014 that will ensure a sustainable future for The Gardens and one that can continue the growth of the sport of greyhound racing in the Hunter region.”
GBOTA Chairman Geoff Rose said the GBOTA is focused on ensuring The Gardens can continue to operate unaffected up until the end of 2013.
“The GBOTA sees its role simply as a caretaker at The Gardens while GRNSW determines the best pathway for the future management of the venue,” Mr Rose said.
