Labor Party release a plan to clean up NSW greyhound industry

THE New South Wales Labor Party has released a plan which will put before parliament with the aim of reforming the greyhound industry.

It comes as the government is expected to introduce its legislation to outlaw the $335 million industry as of July 1, 2017, when Parliament resumes next Tuesday.

Since the announcement on July 7 by Premier Mike Baird and Deputy Premier and Minister for Racing Troy Grant, several Nationals MPs have voiced their concerns and threatened to oppose the ban.

NSW Opposition Leader Luke Foley expressed it is possible for the industry to reform, but said it is essential that National Party members stand up for the interests of those in country areas and join with Labor to overturn the legislation.

“The time has come for National Party members to stand up for regional communities,” Foley said.

“Abstaining from the vote won’t change a thing. The Nationals will need to vote with Labor to save greyhound racing. The greyhound industry will be shut down unless Mr Baird’s legislation is voted down.

“There are 16 National Party members in the lower house, seven of them in the Upper House – let’s see which of them are all hat and no cattle.

“There is a path forward to clean-up the industry and establish a regulatory body with a mandate for the highest standards of animal welfare.”

On Sunday, Foley and Shadow Gaming and Racing Minister Michael Daley unveiled their plan, based on the Special Commission of Inquiry Report handed down by Justice Michael McHugh, which parliament could follow to reform the sport rather than completely shutting it down.

The proposed legislation put forward by the NSW Labor party would include the establishment of a new regulator responsible for enforcing the highest standards of animal welfare, the separation of the commercial and regulatory functions of the sport and the implementation of severe punishments for those found guilty of animal mistreatment including life bans from greyhound racing and possible gaol terms.

As a part of the proposed plan, Labor would also prohibit the selling off of any public land which is currently being used for greyhound racing.

1700 full time jobs are expected to be culled if the ban comes into force, 1000 of which are in regional areas, while the sport also provides enjoyment to tens of thousands.

“Troy Grant as Nationals Leader has completely sold out rural and regional communities across the state. He is now just a puppet of the Greens and north shore conservatives,” Daley said.

“If the National Party won’t stand up for the jobs and livelihoods of thousands of people in country towns, then what do they stand for?

“Labor has said all along, it’s not fair to punish the majority of passionate, animal-loving participants in the greyhound industry because of the wrongdoings of a rotten few.”

Deborah555 must say I am smitten. didn’t really believe he would go all the way DEB ,but there you go, a politician with forthought. a rarity….lol. one would only need to make a phone call to the GRV and politely ask…”how did you get your model to work so well” is it that hard to just do simple things and share state secrets for the betterment of anything, not just greyhounds.BAIRD/GRANT seem to want to continue the state separation crap, but the GRV is so simple and workable, why cant it be implemented in the nanny state(who conjoured up that name?) a big… Read more »

The leader of the opposition proposals are in step with the non radical vision statements of Grey2K in their last return to Government in the USA. see prompt.

http://www.grey2kusa.org/pdf/GREY2K-USA-WORLDWIDE-990.pdf

The prohibition of all greyhound activity and the extermination of greyhounds policy of the NSW Government makes them world leaders as radicals,

Luke Foley still hasn’t stated how many dogs would end up being wastage under his plan. I keep hearing the terms ‘minimise wastage’ etc .. which are nice, cosy terms. Lets get to some numbers shall we? What is an acceptable number of dogs to kill because they weren’t fast enough? 500? 1000? 5000? Lets see the industry put out a number to the general public and see what the public make of that number.

DaveSampson75 how does/can one get to such numbers DAVE?

can you? no.

can we? no

why?….because it has to re-set  the time clock from the day the new rules come into effect. it is already established that GUESSES have been used for figures, for this, that, otherwise

why?

because the stupid GA the so called KEEPERS OF THE BOOK,never thought that it was a requirement.

so reset the timeclock, and start again. takes time dave, are you patient enough?

is BAIRD? no he isn’t because it would SHOW ACCURACY,and that is disallowed in GOVERNMENT.

DaveSampson75 dave old mate you better get onto you local breeders of back yard mutts why don’t you care about that wastage

also chickens once they cant be used for eggs are classed as wastage you don’t mind sucking down a chicken burger all those chickens, cows ect are wastage

DaveSampson75

impact DaveSampson75 Oh I do care about that wastage … one battle at a time. I can see the greyhound racing industry on its knees, so I want to make sure the knockout blow is delivered before moving onto the horses and backyard breeders.

Chickens as a food source (ie the laying of eggs) is separate from putting down dogs purely because gamblers have no use for them. Apples and Oranges.

Dont worry, the horse racing industry think they are safe … they are not … I can assure you of that …

DaveSampson75 impact  Dave your delusions of grandeur are showing and your real motives, which are increasing becoming less about animal welfare and more about controlling, winning, on their knees, knockout – power which I would suggest is your real unaddressed need not a love of animals.

NOW,BEING A  CAREER PUBLIC SERVANT PUT INTO THAT ROLE BY MIKE BAIRD, DO YOU BELIEVE FOR ONE MINUTE HE WOULD STEP ASIDE?…NO WAY FANNY. HE HAS THE SUPPORT OF BAIRD,AND MORE IMPORTANTLY,IF NEWSON… Read more »

DaveSampson75 dogem53  So you do work do you Dave. I wonder what your employer would think about all the work time you spend on this site. I doubt they hired you to “spend hours furthering your own fanatical causes” unless of course Animals Australia has an office in North Sydney.

I figured you spent a lot of time in trendy cafes I just wasn’t sure if it was Melbourne or Sydney, thanks for clearing up that little mystery.
