Littermates Sunshine Surf And Canford Cliffs Give Smith’s A Double

Speedy beginnings gave litter mates Sunshine Surf and Canford Cliffs the advantage they needed to win their respective races at Casino last Friday. Prepared by husband and wife team of Bill and Sheila Smith, Sunshine Surf began proceedings by scoring in the Cow 107.9FM Maiden, holding out Miss Mulgowie in a handy 23.31 seconds.

Later, Canford Cliffs got straight onto the bunny from box four, to lead the procession in the Mc Donald’s Pharmacy stake. It was his first run over the over the 484 metre journey and he won by a length in 27.70.

Trainer Mitch Northfield must be wondering “where to now” after his flying machine Kooringa Squirt took out her third Free For All in a row. A faultless beginner, she went straight to the front to beat the well performed Karanne Star by 3/4 length in 22.97. When you are leading and running 23 seconds “up front” you will always be hard to toss as the daughter of Whisky Assassin / Kooringa Dianne is proving with seven Casino wins under her belt.

A great two dog “war” between Jolly Jonna and Bundanoon highlighted the Meat E Vite Extra Pro stake. On box rise they went as one, with neither giving an inch in a great chasing exhibition. Opinions were divided on who had won when the judge called a halt, and after a delay as the officials perused the photo finish, the result went to Bundaoon by a half head. She is raced by Jeff and Gloria Smith and ran 27.70.

In another tight go, the pair of Dame Bluebell and Tender Tears couldn’t be separated in the Charcoal Inn Distance stake. As in the previous event, they raced together for the entire 620 metres, and ran 36.27 for their connections.

Supreme Allegro won the other distance race when she clocked 36.04 for Neville Robson. She raced away in the back section, and held on well to win by 1 3/4 lengths at her first distance start.

Vic Sorrenson made a welcome return to the winners circle when Trick Rider won the Richmond Bakery maiden. When favourite Kingsbrae Jane knucled over at the start, Trick Rider was able to take up the running and won by 2 1/4 lengths recording 23.42.

Rhythm and Grace took out the Tweed to Casino Final when she led throughout running 23.36 for Ron Mc Calman, and Late Debate ran the fastest time over the 484 metres (27.45) in winning the Buckingham Chuck Blue Paws Final.

In the other events, Flying Fatty scored by 3 3/4 lengths for Vic Sherwell; Outreach was an all of the way winner for Gerrard Bowe in 27.65, and Golden Earing sent favourite backers home on a happy note running 23.09 in a 4 1/4 length victory.

Casino race again this Friday afternoon.
