Megan Lee Mason has been found guilty in NSW’s sixth case to appear before stewards with regard to a positive swab to a banned Anabolic Steroid.
On Friday GHRRA Stewards finalised an inquiry into the positive finding of Hydroxystanozolol in the urine sample taken from the greyhound Footy Statement at The Gardens on 8th August 2008.
The inquiry opened on 6th November 2008 where evidence was taken from the trainer and part owner of Footy Statement, Ms Megan Lee Mason. Hunter Valler Veterinary Surgeon Dr Peter Yore also gave evidence at the inquiry.
Ms Mason advised the Inquiry that she had taken the greyhound to Dr. Yore after receiving it in a poor condition on the 25 June 2008.
Footy Statement had previously raced in Victoria and was trained by M. Fearnley, who had raced the greyhound for its first five starts for one win and one third placing at Traralgon, Sale and Warragul tracks. Footy Statement had not been swabbed at any of her five runs in Victoria and had last raced in Victoria on the 22nd June 2008 at Sale finishing last.
After receiving veterinary advice from Dr Yore, Dr. Yore administered two injections of Stanozol a week or two apart.
Ms Mason admitted to seeking what was described as “limited” advice as to any withholding period for the banned anabolic steroid prior to nominating it to race.
Despite that, Ms Mason nominated the Footy Statement for races on the 19th July 2008 at The Gardens, finishing third in that event; for 25th July 2008 at The Gardens when not gaining a run as a reserve; for the 31st July 2008 at Maitland when drawn as a reserve and not gaining a run; for The Gardens meeting on the 1st August 2008, finishing second; and for the meeting for which the positive swab arose on the 8th August 2008 when winning at The Gardens.
Footy Statement was not swabbed at any of those runs until the winning run on the 8th August 2008.
Ms Mason pleaded guilty to a breach of Rule 83(2)(a) which provides:-
R83 Racing greyhound to be drug free
- (2)The owner, trainer or person in charge of a greyhound-
- (a) nominated to compete in an Event;
- shall present the greyhound free of any drug
The particulars of the charge being Ms Mason did on the 8th August 2008 present the greyhound Footy Statement for an event being Race 5 Bell’s Radiator Service Stake held at The Gardens and that the race day urine sample taken from the greyhound returned on confirmatory analysis positive to Hydroxystanozolol, a metabolite of Stanozol.
In determining the penalty GHRRA Stewards took in to consideration the fact that any penalty imposed must act as a deterrent, that Ms Mason pleaded guilty and Ms Mason’s prior good record.
GHRRA Stewards disqualified Ms Mason for a period of six months commencing immediately, the 6th November 2008.
GHRRA Stewards also disqualified Footy Statement from her winning run at The Gardens on the 8th August 2008 and made second placegetter, Surfin’ Mint the eventual winner.
In other Stewards Inquiry news, there is still no further news on what was officially NSW’s second positive swab to an Anabolic Steroid involving greyhound Mick’s Puzzle and greyhound trainer Peter Passfield. The original inquiry as set down to be heard on the 18th Spetember 2008.
