Miner’s Moss Sets The Standard In Group Two Black Top Heats

Six outstanding heats of the $40,000 Group Two were conducted at in wet and miserable conditions last night, however that didn’t stop some cracking times being recorded, with four of the six winners breaking the 29.50 second barrier.

Heat one went to local trainer Jason Mackay and $2.60 favourite Zipping Summah who began brilliantly from box five and showed electrifying speed to the first turn, clocking a first sectional of 4.92. The daughter of and Sirocco Lass, owned by renowned breeders Martin and Fiona Hallinan, scored by two and three quarter lengths in a flying time of 29.49. Kilkenny Babe battled on gamely to finish second and made up good ground to finish third.

Queensland chaser Rose of Galo was well supported in heat two, stepping out on track as the $2.40 favourite and didn’t disappoint punters with a flawless display from box seven. After suffering a check early on in the race, the daughter of and Noir Rose saluted by a length and three quarters in another flying time of 29.47. The Albert Kennewell trained chaser notched up her twentieth career win last night and could well and truly head back to the Sunshine State next week with the trophy. Hersi was very gallant in defeat for trainer and Tricky Jade for Martin Hallinan finished in third position.

Pre-series favourite was all the rage in heat three for Jason Mackay at $1.40 and was looking for her ninth consecutive win. The litter sister of Zipping Summah didn’t have everything go her way, after an average start and a running battle with reverse starter He’s A Knight, the winner zoomed past early leader Zulu Mystique at the 600m boxes to streak away by four and three quarter lengths in a sizzling 29.44. Zipping Willow recorded a sizzling run home of 12.17 and has now recorded an astonishing twenty eight wins from just forty starts and has plenty of room for improvement in next week’s final. Dee Getta for local trainer Shane Hill ran a brilliant race to finish second and for wound up in third.

Martin Hallinan and Jason Mackay were hoping to qualify another runner in next week’s final with Zipping Tarn the $3.00 favourite and Tricky Rose also well supported, starting at $3.70. Tricky Rose was best away from box five and led Zipping Tarn into the back straight, with Cloud Ten sitting in third position. Heading into the home straight, Cloud Ten found the rails and loomed up on the inside of Tricky Rose to score by a head at big odds in a fast time of 29.59 for owner-trainer Anthony Duggan. Tricky Rose finished second and Remember Ross stormed home to grab third.

Queen Esther and Miner’s Moss shared favouritism in heat five, with Queen Esther badly missing the start, giving Miner’s Moss a beautiful rails run heading into the first turn. The Matthew Reid trained chaser led throughout in a best of the night time of 29.43. The son of and Bellbird Park also recorded the fastest run home for the night of 12.16 and scored by two and half lengths over Dean Swain’s Push It and My Awesome Opal for Marie Burton finished third.

The sixth and final heat saw Lani Banarni the $2.10 favourite ahead of Evil Punk, however Robert Barnden and Alan’s Kidz had other ideas, with the son of El Galo and Screaming Kidz leading all the way from box in a fast time of 29.66. Lani Banarni missed the start and checked off another runner at the first turn, forcing her to the back of the field, whilst Evil Punk found a head of trouble at the start and flashed home to finish second, beaten three and a half lengths. Edge for Graeme Barnett also ran home well to finish in third position.
