Single NSW Metro Club Past 2008

Greyhound () today announced a new Metropolitan Racing Policy that provides for no more than one metropolitan race club being recognised and funded beyond 2008.

The policy outlines the position of GRNSW for the conduct of metropolitan racing from 2008 until 2013.

In announcing the policy GRNSW Chairman Professor AM said GRNSW is committed to the development of a vibrant metropolitan racing sector.

“The Board understands that to provide an optimal level of financial return within the sector a one club metropolitan structure is the only suitable and viable way forward for the industry.”

“Metropolitan greyhound racing in NSW has traditionally been conducted by two entities, the NSW Association (NCA) and the NSW Greyhound Breeders, Owners and trainers Association ().”

“Both Clubs have made consecutive losses over several years, and the increasing inefficiency of the operations under a dual has been of concern to all stakeholders.”

“Greater administrative efficiency will be achieved through having a single metropolitan club
focused on the conduct and growth of the metropolitan racing business.”

“GRNSW had commenced a review of metropolitan racing in late 2007 with a view to considering alternative operating models for the conduct of metropolitan racing at Wentworth Park. However the focus of GRNSW shifted to outlining a pathway for the future conduct of metropolitan racing once the NCA and GBOTA signalled their intention to enter an agreement whereby the GBOTA would effectively take over the metropolitan racing operations of the NCA”, Professor Allan said.

GRNSW Chief Executive said the policy was fundamental to changing the way we administer greyhound racing in NSW.

“The policy stipulates positive ways of making changes to our traditional metropolitan racing business which will allow us to grow and work cooperatively with the metropolitan race club to achieve better results including prizemoney growth in the future,” Mr Hogan said.

“GRNSW is committed to supporting the one metropolitan body giving them an exclusive licence to conduct a minimum of 104 metropolitan race meetings per year and be funded accordingly, provided they comply with the policy.”

“The conditions of the policy include regular review and analysis of their business financially, commitments to marketing, broadcast rights, prizemoney growth and the setting up of a Metropolitan Racing Strategy which will provide a foundation for the industry in the medium to long term.”

The policy is now available to be viewed on the GRNSW website www.grnsw.com.au.
