Will Supercell Triumph In The Silver Collar?

Ken and Mary Wright have owned and trained some wonderful chasers over their time in the sport. Who can forget winner Edie Beauchamp or Derby winner Eiffella? These are just two of many talented dogs that have resided at the Wright's Appin kennels. On Thursday night, , handled by Karina Britton and trained by Mary Wright, will take his place in the final of the Silver Collar.

Supercell carries the blood of the wonderful Edie Beauchamp in his lines. His mother, Super Celestrial, is a result of the Slater-Edie Beauchamp mating. Ken didn't breed Supercell's litter but received a pup from the mating. He is a talented dog, having won 11 races from 30 starts, including wins at , Appin and Dapto over a range of distances.

The 33kg black dog suffered a fall at Dapto back in October and in recent week's looks to be running back into form. He ran second in his heat behind last week and then backed up with a win at Appin on Sunday.

Supercell has the time on the board to win Thursday's final, but it's his box manners that may let him down. He will need to beat fastest heat winner Gaudi out of the boxes.

“I think that if he behaves himself in the boxes, which he can sometimes do, but most of the time he is very erratic in the boxes, if he behaves himself in the boxes and he's in the first couple at the first turn, he can run fast enough to win the race. However, he's got to beat Gaudi out to start with. If he's down when the boxes open he's a very quick dog. When I trial him post to post at Dapto he trials best of the morning every day. It's only when you put him in the boxes, one morning he will run 29.8 and the other he will run 30.8. He's the worst dog I've had in 45 years box wise. We've tried everything we possibly can. Just a couple of things went wrong in his early breaking in and I'm probably the one to blame. I made a mistake, but that's history.”

The dog will be handled by Karina Britton on Thursday, who also handled Ken's winners Edie Beauchamp and Eiffella. Karina has been a massive help to Ken and Mary over the years. “I've got Karina still and she's the greatest asset of all. She's the driving force behind the pair of us and she's family. She's been loyal as poop, you couldn't get a better kid.”

The Wright's have four dogs in work at the moment and of their current stock Ken rates Supercell the fastest, but the most consistent is Moonshine Crash. He's also got plenty more young dogs lining up to take a spot in his kennels. “I've got that dog of Joe Bertinato's, it's won two or three in town, Moonshine Crash, he came to me with no form. This dog Supercell is a fast dog. The other dog is more reliable early. I've got a lot of young dogs for owners ready to come through. Hopefully we'll find something amongst them and we might be able to win another Group race.”

In order to make room for the younger dogs, Wright plans on selling Supercell. “I'll sell him if somebody wants to buy him. He's on the market. He's won 11 from 30. He's for and won't be expensive. I've got to move him out to make room for others.”

If Supercell can time the start he is in with a big chance in the Dapto Silver Collar. A win would see Ken's plans of selling the dog come to fruition quickly and, in turn, give Ken and Mary the opportunity to continue the search for their next Group race winner.
