VICTORIAN superstar sprinter Dyna Villa scored the third Group win of his career at Albion Park on Thursday night, blowing his rivals away in the final of the Group 2 Queensland Derby.
Stepping beautifully from box two, the Jenny Hunt-trained chaser was never headed in a three length win over No Donuts, clocking a blistering time of 29.70 over 520-metres. Brad Canty’s talented youngster was gallant in defeat and won plenty of admirers with another gusty performance, with local runner Fabulous Storm giving his trainer Reg Hazelgrove a huge thrill when finishing third.
Punters threw their support behind Dyna Villa, a son of Collision and Roxio Bale, which started as the $1.80 favourite and didn’t disappoint, bringing up his 23rd career win at start number 42. Owner Brendan Wheeler has more reasons to celebrate, with Dyna Villa cracking the $700,000 prize money mark thanks to the Derby’s winner’s purse of $48,475.
Thursday’s win will add another impressive piece of silverware to the Wheeler trophy cabinet for Dyna Villa, which already includes his 2014 Group 1 Melbourne Cup and 2015 Group 1 Paws of Thunder title.
