Queensland legend Reg Kay denies involvement in live-baiting raid

LEGENDARY trainer has confirmed to Australian Racing Greyhound that he has not been suspended, despite speculation he was one of the seven participants caught during the live-baiting raids in Queensland this week.

The RSPCA and Queensland Police Service executed a search warrant on the private trial track of on Wednesday, with Noble confirming two wild pigs were removed from his Karrabin property.

While Kay admitted he was at Noble's track that morning, he said he had left by that stage.

“To be perfectly honest I was trialling out there, I took four pups out there and I drove out, I didn't know anything was going on, apparently they [police and the RSPCA] drove in when I drove out,” Kay said.

“The only reason we went out there is because we have only got two tracks up here and to give the dogs a change of scenery. We don't go there very often.”

Kay added he had no involvement in any alleged baiting activities at the premises.

“I trialled early, I put four pups around with wool on the arm, I didn't see any live stuff there,” he said. “I have never seen any live stuff there.

“It is just unfortunate I had to be there or you never would have heard my name mentioned.”

Kay, who has won an Australian trainer-of-the-year title and has put the polish on three winners, remains adamant his greyhounds are not trained using any live-baiting methods.

“I am not naive enough to think that things don't go on, but we have our own straight track and we have squeakers everywhere, there is also a bullring with a permanent squeaker tied on the arm with wool on it. We always tease the dogs with it.”

“We don't give live kills, we use wool. Our dogs are broken in on wool and squeakers and we keep them on that.”

The RSPCA has also carried out raids in New South Wales and Victoria, with 16 registered participants stood down from those states.

It is thought the raids are being conducted following revelations from the ABC's Four Corners program which is believed to have captured damning vision that is set to air on Monday night in an episode titled Making A Killing.

The other six participants suspended in Queensland are yet to be named but they are all believed to have been on Noble's property on the day of the raid.

Kay was disappointed with the raids and the picture they are painting of the greyhound industry.

“In any field of sport there are the bad eggs,” he said. “I feel embarrassed by all this, to be honest, it makes you feel like walking away from the game.”

Is there any details of exactly who and what allegations are tabled. The public and more so the racing public and punters really should be getting told exactly what’s going on. Mud sticks and for this bloke to have to comment on it then it clearly shows just that. I’m finding through my own research facts are hard to establish

The NSW names are known and published. We have obtained a list of 10 names from Victoria that includes some BIG names, but unfortunately neither the Police, RSPCA nor Greyhound Racing Victoria will confirm the names; and the people concerned have not returned or answered our calls. Without that confirmation, it would be irresponsible of us to release the details of those involved despite the fact the names have travelled quickly on the racing “grapevine”.

Sorry guys should’ve explained myself better. I most certainly wasn’t having a go at you and Thankyou for reporting what you know. My comment was more directed at the government agencies involved

Agree completely but Greyhound Racing New South Wales and Greyhound Racing Victoria have always struggled with the concept of total transparency. Greyhound Racing Victoria have already seemingly allowed several of those involved to transfer the greyhounds from their names to those of their spouses – which is only going to add fuel to the 4Corners fire.

Dark days. Guess the only upshot is the sport will be getting portrayed badly on probably the least watched station. The bad news is no objectivity. They don’t go and report on the majority that do the righty.

If you are that squeaky clean Mr Kay then why were you using a non approved non Racing Queensland registered trial track when there are two others in the same road that are approved. Some authorities might have come down in the last shower of rain but I can assure you Mr Kay we haven’t.

Good point mate. So it is an unreg track does that mean the owner doesn’t com under QLD authorities? Only reg trainers using it.

Kay due to admitting it is guilty of using an unlicensed track…what are those penalties?

I think Mwk that is why the RSPCA and Police were involved along with racing authorities, but we will have to wait for the official report outlining the details to be made public.
My understanding is that IF he was involved then not only could he be penalised by the racing authorities but IF involved it is a criminal offence to use live bait that can carry imprisonment and /or a $30,000 fine, which I hope all those involved get so that our industry can start cleaning itself up.

The live baiting aside, the fact remains that greyhound racing industry
still ends up killing thousands of dogs each year in victoria alone.
Greyhound racing kills greyhounds, before, during and after racing.

That’s surprising in Victoria, as GAP Victoria re-home more dogs than anywhere else in Australia and they have more people wanting to adopt than they have greyhounds.

Recluse 60 where are you getting that information from?  The amount of registered litters in VIC has averaged 1000 for the past 10 years, that conservatively means about 5000 greyhounds bred each year, so if a greyhound can only race to four years old, where are all the greyhounds going then?  Are GAP rehoming 3000 to 4000 dogs a year? Maybe if GAP have more people wanting to adopt then greyhounds retiring they can point them to any number of other greyhound rescue groups that are full (and get no money at all from the industry that they are trying… Read more »

What a joke, The “respectable” reg kay was caught red handed on camera with a live bait and his dog, how can this fool deny that? I wonder if any of the VERY top trainers/breeders do this too.
How about Graeme Bate? Jason Thompson? Paul Wheeler? I wonder if they are in on it too, but have been smart enough
to not be caught?

HI guys, I know this is probably the wrong forum, but ive just read about the Ready2Race auctions in Victoria, where they auction dogs aged about 18mths ready to race, has anyone heard about this auction before? Im from QLD, I would like to buy a dog at this auction and bring it up here, should I try and find a trainer up here first? Or should I go down to VIC and buy one at the auction and just find a VIC trainer and keep it there? One more thing guys, when giving a dog like this to a… Read more »

Why does he insist on saying “live things?”  They are animals, little furry animals, possums, piglets and rabbits.  He has no respect for all these little animals killed for live baiting when he says they are “things”…. hope he’s jailed because it’s obvious he’s lying about everything.

bjb55 I agree with you, from what I’ve seen of him he has no respect for anything except himself, all the good sires he had he sold to China even though they had won him hundreds of thousands of dollars he couldn’t even given them a decent home. Lets hope he does get jail.
