The leading Queensland conditioner has three runners engaged in the Queensland Sprint and Distance finals on Thursday night at Albion Park, with the winner of each progressing through to the respective National finals at Angle Park on August 27.
In the sprint decider, Ruetschi will put the polish on both Sheza Keen Size (box one) and Flying Circus (box seven) which are rated $3.25 and $81 chances with online bookmaker Bet365.
Sheza Keen Size has won both of her starts since resuming from a spell late last month and looks ideally positioned in box one to claim the ticket to South Australia.
“I think she will be hard to beat,” Ruetschi told Australian Racing Greyhound, “She is going really well at the moment and she is improving every week.
“I set her for this race about a month ago…her last two or three runs before she had a spell she went off a bit and she had a slight injury so we gave her a short spell.
“She has come back well and she is going as good as ever now.
“There are faster dogs than her in the race, but if she can get a break on them she can definitely pinch it.”
Ruetschi says Sheza Keen Size, a regally bred daughter of Head Bound and Surf Queen, would be suited by the Angle Park track and could have an impact in the $75,000 showpiece in two and a half week’s time.
“If she got through to the final I think Adelaide would suit her down to the ground because it is a really tight track and she is a speed dog.
“She has to get there first though and there are eight very good dogs in the race this week.
Ruetschi says his other sprint contender, Flying Circus, will need a lot of luck from box seven in the state final, but says the winner of seven from 37 has done a great job just qualifying as one of the top eight sprinters in Queensland.
“Less than 12 months ago he was racing at Rockhampton and now he has come through the grades down here and he is racing some top company dogs,” he said.
“He is a bloke that has to begin and he can be a bit hit and miss at the start.
“Realistically he is a very rough hope, he needs everything to go his way, but he is in the race which is the main thing and it is very good for him to have made the final.”
Ruetschi will also have a runner in the Queensland Distance final, with Got A Brother (box two) rated a $10 shot against a classy line-up including the state’s best stayer, Cyndie’s Magic ($2.25 fav).
“He came to us having only won a couple of races and now he is racing in group finals so he is going good,” he said.
“He is a rough chance because he is drawn well on the inside, but because he is very one paced he can’t afford to be held up.
“He is probably a length or two off the top class dogs in the race, but he is going well and he should go alright.”
