Tony Brett hopes Keybow can lock away spot in Topgun 2015

CHAMPION trainer is hopeful his star sprinter Keybow will be able to confirm his spot in this month's 1 Topgun when he contests the at on Thursday night.

The son of and Key Exit has been racing in stellar form of late, with recent placings in the Group 1 , the Group 1 Sprint Championship and the Group 1 Megastar.

Brett believes a win in the $25,000-to-the-winner feature this week would guarantee him a start in the invitation only race at The Meadows on October 24.

“You go back through his form and it is hard to fault him,” Brett told Australian Racing Greyhound.

“I have only had him for 14 starts and in that time he has placed in three Group 1 races and he has won five at Albion Park, in most of which he broke 30 seconds.

“That sort of form stacks up good – he also has a P.B at The Meadows which is in the 29.50s and I think he is going as good as ever.

“His early pace always puts him in contention for the big races, especially when you are getting down to around the 29.60 mark and I have no doubts that he is still capable of running that sort of time around The Meadows.

“If you could find me eight other dogs that deserve a spot in the final ahead of him then I'd be very surprised.

“I think he has done enough to get in there and I think a win here would cement his spot.”

Keybow is currently the $1.70 favourite with Bet365 to take out the Gold Coast Cup following his emphatic heat victory last week.

Exploding out of box one, Keybow never looked in danger as he raced clear to score his 27th career victory by four-and-three-quarter-lengths over Don't Go Quietly in a slick 29.88.

Keybow moves into box four this week, but Brett is remaining optimistic.

“Box four makes things interesting, he won't be able to make any mistakes because there are a couple of dogs in the race that can run just as quick as him.

“From where he is he will have to get out well, but the good thing about the draw is that the two really quick early dogs – Cash In Motion ($6.00) and Norm The Storm ($8.50) – are outside him.

“They are going to have to work to cross him and if they can't then he may be off and gone with the prize.”

A dual Group 1 winner, a victory in the race would also elevate Keybow's career earnings over the $600,000 mark for his NSW owners Kel and Michelle Lean.

Brett says his charge is firing on all cylinders ahead of the race and has the class factor on many of his opponents.

“He had his last gallop up the straight this morning and he is jumping out of his skin – he is loving his racing at the moment.

“The young dogs in this race can run the times and that is well and good, but when you are up against Group dogs like him I think having that experience goes a long way – he knows what its all about – he is just so professional.”

The Group 3 Gold Coast Cup is race seven at Albion Park and is set to jump at 8:55pm AEDT.
