Velocity Regina Claims 2010 Queensland Futurity

Velocity Regina ($2.80) gave Steve and Meryl Williams their first Group success when she led throughout to win the Group 2 Qld Futurity (520m) at Albion Park last Thursday night.

The daughter of Surf Lorian-Super Size scored by six and three-quarter lengths over Little Sparkle ($2.20) with a length and a quarter to Lilly’s Pride ($7.00) in third.

The winner ran 30.02 on a wet track to take her record to six wins and five seconds in 13 starts.

It was trainer Tony Brett’s fourth Futurity victory followed wins by Bogie Leigh, Honey Mist and Queen Lauryn.

Immediate plans are for Velocity Regina to head to Sydney to contest the Group 1 Golden Easter Egg series at Wentworth Park.

The victory was the first Group success for Steve Williams who is the head of the Velocity Syndicate that has become a force in greyhound racing in the past couple of years.

Velocity Regina’s dam Super Size was bred and raced by the late Bob Thompson from the Northern Rivers.

Williams and his Velocity Lodge Syndicate bought Super Size and won eight races with her in the Brett kennel.

They then shared the Surf Lorian litter with Thompson and his family, getting four of the pups of which Velocity Regina is one.

“Tony’s got a litter brother at home who is something but he’s had a few accidents,” said Williams.

Bob Thompson died last year and his son Trevor took over his greyhound interests. He has since repeated the Surf Lorian-Super Size mating.

Runner-up Little Sparkle continued the run of bad luck in the Futurity for the Chappelow family.

Little Sparkle’s dam Frosty Fruits was also runner-up in a Qld Futurity final (to Smart And Sassy). Little Sparkle will come back to Albion Park soon for the rich Flying Amy Classic.

Third placegetter Lilly’s Pride was a great effort. Owner Melissa Carter made the trip from Bundaberg to see the bitch give her a chance of Group glory.

“Sandra has done a remarkable job with this bitch, we thank her so much,” said Melissa of trainer Sandra Hunt.

After the placed runners the field finished in the following order 4th Gold Nebo ($6.00), 5th Velocity Trish ($7.00), 6th Fawn Magic ($7.00), 7th Twin Impact ($12.00) and Special Chance ($51.00).

Velocity Regina is a Red Brindle bitch whelped December 2007 by Surf Lorian from Super Size (Primo Uno x Primrose Bride). She is raced by the Velocity Lodge Syndicate and trained by Tony Brett of Grandchester in Queensland. Velocity Regina has won six from 13 and with the $25,000 first prize for the Futurity it took her current stake earnings to $35,780.
