Queensland Derby glory for Spirit Boy in impressive win
The Group 2 Queensland Derby Final at Albion Park crowned a new champion in Spirit Boy, who delivered a commanding all-the-way victory in 29.85 seconds.
Jumping cleanly from box one, Spirit Boy used his ideal draw to lead the field and held off challengers with ease to secure the $75,000 winner’s purse at $5 odds with Blondebet.
2025 Queensland Derby Final – Spirit Boy (29.85)
Breaking swiftly, Spirit Boy faced early pressure from Italian Stallion but established a decisive lead down the back straight.
Black Liar, an outsider at $101 with the top online bookmakers, emerged as a strong runner-up, finishing six lengths behind, while Italian Stallion settled for third after an energetic start. Backcreek Benny completed the top four.
The pre-race favourites, Wreck James and More Than Money, endured trouble at the first turn, severely impacting their races.
Wreck James finished a distant seventh, while More Than Money could only manage sixth after being checked early.
This win adds to Spirit Boy’s impressive record, with 18 wins from 34 starts and career earnings now exceeding $145,000.
For trainer Craig Gardoll, it marks a triumphant Derby victory after narrowly missing out with Party Mode last year.
Spirit Boy’s ability to combine early speed with strong finishing power positions him as a greyhound to watch in upcoming feature events.
His Queensland Derby success cements his reputation as one of the standout young stars in Australian greyhound racing.
