Racing Queensland hits seven trainers with show-cause notices

A DAY on from the screening of the Four Corners investigation into live baiting in greyhound racing, the hits keep coming for the besieged industry.

Authorities in the three states affected by the scandal tried to present a united front amid a climate of anger and disgust over the acts of cruelty by greyhound participants in footage presented by the ABC.

There were widespread calls for life bans for anyone found guilty of live-baiting offences and a push to prevent trainers accused of serious offences from transferring dogs into the care of others so they could continue racing.

Other developments included:

  • In Queensland, seven trainers – , , Debra Arnold, Tony McCabe, James Harding, and – were issued show-cause notices as to why they should not be warned off Queensland racetracks for life. A further six were stood down by .
  • In NSW, trainer John Thompson was added to the list of those stood down, bringing the number in that state to six.
  • In Victoria, a former Greyhound Racing Victoria and racing operations manager was identified as among those in attendance as live baiting was employed at the Tooradin trial track.
  • NSW and Victorian industry awards nights set down for have been postponed, as has an awards night in Queensland.
  • Federal politician Andrew Wilkie has called for greyhound racing to be suspended nationally.
  • The board met at Deagon on Tuesday afternoon and six trainers were added to the list of those stood down. “The other six trainers also remain suspended and their greyhounds suspended pending the outcome of the investigation,” chairman Kevin Dixon said in a statement. “Those individuals are Stephen Sherwell, Gerri Crisci, , Steven Arnold, Mick Emery and Samantha Roberts.”

Dixon said it had also been decided Reg Kay would be removed from the Queensland Greyhound .

GRV has resolved to suspend any greyhound trained and/or owned by the 10 persons suspended by the board, on Friday, February 13, in relation to live baiting. The dogs will reportedly not be able to race until investigations into the allegations are completed.

Great news , but what happens to their poor dogs .I hope they are closely guarded . Some of these people are capable of anything and i have grave concerns for the dogs  People like that mongrel laughing about the possum and its baby are a real worry.

Great move by GRV to suspend all dogs associated with these scum rather than just the people involved. It prevents them from transferring to friends and family. But what safeguards are being put in place to protect the dogs since it is clearly not their fault?

Equating feral animal control to this story is an extremely long bow to draw viv. 1080 is a fast killer and doesn’t effect native animals or birds, myxo takes around 10 days. How would you control invasive species in your left leaning rainbow world Viv.

Wow….. You can not be for real Nick… That is one of the most disturbing things I’ve seen in a while and I’ve seen some pretty fucked up stuff… I understand your passionate about the industry and I like betting on your industry but wow… That’s a very long bow to draw that watching live animals getting tortured is acceptable.. Corey O’Donnell you must have an opinion on this being a trainer!!

Well done nic, no answers and clue as to what you are talking about. You best stay in your arm chair and let people who are willing to put their time and effort in to controlling invasive species do the work for you.

Greyhound racing doesn’t need to be banned it just needs better controls, oversight and much harsher penalties.

Kyleigh 1080 is not banned; you do have to have a special permit to purchase it though.DEPI use it in our national/state parks every year for vermin control; when I drove across the Nullabor a few months ago, there were warning signs almost all the way about the 1080 (they do air drops of it, so it’s “everywhere”)
