Optic Shimmer makes it a perfect ten

SOUTH Australian chaser Optic Shimmer notched up her 10th consecutive victory at Gawler on Tuesday night, continuing a sensational run of form, which began back in April.

Owned and trained at Lewiston by Robyn Mackellar, the daughter of Hesa Felon and Miss Wisconsin, which was bred in New South Wales by successful trainer Amanda Ginn, blew her rivals away by three-and-one-quarter-lengths over the 531m distance, recording a 30.64 best of the day performance.

Mackellar was understandably delighted after the win and received plenty of praise afterwards from her keen followers on Facebook.

“I’m extremely happy with how well she’ settled in here and actually a little surprised too by how well she’s going,” Mackellar told Australian Racing Greyhound.

“We knew she had ability when she was getting pre-trained, as I always talk with Amanda (Ginn) on a daily basis about the dogs.”

The 27kg chaser’s winning streak began during April, demolishing her opposition in a 400m event at Gawler by ten lengths. Clocking a best of the day time of 22.42, Mackellar returned to Gawler a week later and witness Optic Shimmer lower her personal best time to 22.39.

Just four days later, Optic Shimmer made her debut at Angle Park over 515m and didn’t disappoint her trainer, leading all the way in a smart run of 29.84. She then returned to Gawler two weeks later and successfully tackled the 531m, clocking another best of the day run in 30.80.

Optic Shimmer’s next five wins came at Angle Park over the 515m distance, with the black flash lowering her personal best to a speedy 29.69.

Mackellar has no immediate plans to target feature races and is remaining humble and grounded about her consecutive victories, with the interest and support for Optic Shimmer continually increasing.

“I don’t have a favourite win, they have all been rock solid runs, which is all I can ask for.”

“I don’t really have anything planned for her, I just wait and see what’s coming up on the racing calendar and take it week-by-week.”

With superstar Fernando Bale shooting for his 14th straight win on Sunday at Bendigo, we are in the midst of some outstanding performances by greyhounds and their trainers, portraying a fantastic image for the sport.
