Stepping from box seven over the 515m trip, the well-bred son of Oaks Road and Little Looper tried to push up towards the lead in the run around the first turn, but was held up slightly between Wave To Kirra (box five) and Marlow Brown (box eight) which allowed the classy Fabregal (box one) to shoot through to a clear lead.
Despite finding pressure, Worm Burner was able to barge his way into second spot through the catching pen, slipping into top gear down the back and circling the leader approaching the top turn.
Once on the bunny the brindle dog put the paw to the floor, sprinting clear to score by a widening five and a half lengths over Fabregal in a flying 29.53.
The victory made it 10 wins in a row for Worm Burner who boasts a 29.40 personal best at Angle Park and has now won 26 of his 41 career starts. Among his wins is a triumph in this year’s Group 3 Brian Johnston Memorial, with his career earnings standing at an impressive $86,005.
By running the quinella, both Worm Burner and Fabregal will progress through to the Group 1 National Sprint Championship which is set to be run and won at Angle Park on Saturday August 27, 2016.
The feature will see winners of each state sprint final converge on the Adelaide-based track looking to seize the $75,000 winner’s cheque.
Victorian superstar Zambora Brockie is likely to start favourite in the final after drawing ideally in box one.
