Terry Mort And Michael Campbell Fined After Altercation

() today inquired into a complaint lodged by licensed trainer Mr Michael Campbell regarding the alleged conduct of another licensed trainer Mr Terry Mort prior to and following Race 10 at the Greyhound Club on Saturday, 19 April 2014, and subsequent counter complaint of Mr Mort against Mr Campbell.

After taking evidence from Mr Campbell, Mr Mort, and Official Starter of the race meeting Mr Ray Heilbronn, Mr Mort pleaded guilty to a charge under Rule of Racing 86 (f)(iv) which reads:

“A person (including an official) shall be guilty of an offence if the person engages in, publishes or causes to be published, broadcasts or causes to be broadcast, the use of any contemptuous, unseemly, improper, insulting, or offensive language, conduct or behavior in any manner or form towards, or in relation to any other person having official duties in relation to greyhound racing.”

The specifics of the charge being, that on Saturday, 19 April 2014, at the Ipswich Greyhound Club, Mr Mort, licensed trainer of Swifty’s Halo did improperly conduct himself after loading that greyhound into the starting boxes for Race 10 by intentionally raising his right elbow and making contact with licensed trainer Michael Campbell in the torso region after he alleged that Mr Mort had stepped on his greyhound Four Teds.

When considering an appropriate penalty, Stewards were mindful of Mr Mort’s unblemished record with regard to conduct matters, his forthright evidence and remorsefulness throughout the , however also recognised the need for a penalty to serve as a deterrent. Mr Mort was subsequently fined $1000 of which $600 was ordered to be suspended for a period of 12 months subject to him not breaching any conduct related .

Mr Mort was found guilty of a further charge under Greyhounds Australasia Rule of Racing 86 (f)(iv), in that he improperly conducted himself at the Ipswich Greyhound Club on Saturday, 19 April 2014 outside the kennel block after the running of Race 10 by using offensive language towards Mr Campbell.

Mr Mort was fined the sum of $500 of which $400 was ordered to be suspended for a period of 12 months subject to him not breaching any conduct related rules.

In relation to the counter complaint lodged by Mr Mort, Mr Campbell was also charged under and pleaded guilty to Greyhounds Australasia Rule of Racing 86 (f)(iv) in that on Saturday, 19 April 2014 at the Ipswich Greyhound Club he improperly conducted himself when loading Four Teds into the starting boxes by engaging in the use of offensive language directed at licensed trainer Terry Mort after alleging he had stepped on his greyhound.

Mr Campbell was fined the sum of $500 of which $400 was ordered to be suspended for a period of 12 months subject to him not breaching any conduct related rules.

Mr Mort and Mr Campbell were advised of their appeal rights.
