Ella Lucy A Giant Killer In Tas National Sprint Championship Heats

Classy bitch Ella Lucy (Collide – Copper Delight) was responsible for a giant-killing performance at the Tote Racing Centre on Monday night when she took out Heat 3 of the $5,000 Macro Meats State Sprint Championship.

Displaying her customary early brilliance, the owned and prepared bitch hit the ground running and led throughout, to record her 21st win and a crack at the State Final on Monday night.

Left in her wake were several outstanding chasers including the champion Damek ( Cool – World's Finest), which was shooting for his fifth victory in succession and 38th overall.

The Peter Phillips prepared Damek dwelt slightly in the boxes and then ran into traffic mid-race, but has also for Monday night's State Final by being one of the two fastest third place getters.

The winner of Monday night's feature will progress to the $75,000 Macro Meats Sprint Championship to be conducted at Albion Park on August 25th.

A field of outstanding performers will contest the event, with the Ted Medhurst prepared Tadmore Dunoon ( – Baretta Betty) and the recent Melbourne Cup winner St Pierre ( Surf Lorian – Paris St Germain) from the complex, the obvious dangers.

“Ella Lucy ran her first split on Monday night in 4.99 seconds which was the difference between her winning and losing,” Deverell explained this week.

“She has brilliant early speed and has broken 5 seconds on several occasions. She really accelerates once she is clear of the boxes.”

The Penguin based trainer is no stranger to the National Championships, having represented Tasmania in the past with the standouts Blue Stream, Miss Coroneagh, World Crusher, Glencoe Missy and Light Ice Lad.

“Early in my career we tended to concentrate on distance chasers and Light Ice Lad, which actually defeated his kennel-mate in the State Final, is the only sprinter among them,” he explained.

Meanwhile Monday night's $5,000 Macro Meats State Distance Championship is shaping up as a between the prepared bitch Ming Dynasty (Chinatown Lad – Brandon Sky) and the Leigh Wood prepared Thirteen Black ( – Smart And Sassy).

The Paul Felgate owned Ming Dynasty was responsible for a super peformance in winning Heat 3 of the event on Monday night and has now recorded five wins in succession since having her initial run over 720 metres on June 20.

Gittus would like nothing more than to campaign the bitch in Queensland, which would allow her owner to actually see her racing “in person” for the first time.

Thirteen Black, which was impressive in winning Heat 2 on Monday night, was having his first run over the distance for a year and will no doubt be improved by the outing.

The Whitemore based Wood has been responsible for a great training performance with the injury-prone chaser, which has now won 27 of 66 lifetime starts and stakes of almost $50,000.
