Ella Lucy Strikes A Purple Patch

Following a run of outs, smart bitch Ella Lucy (Collide – Copper Delight) has struck a purple patch of form, winning three Invitation events at the Tote Racing Centre in recent weeks in brilliant fashion.

The bitch has now won 17 of 58 lifetime starts while accumulating a purse of slightly in excess of $37,000.

“Ella Lucy dropped a monkey muscle and lost confidence for a while and it didn’t help that she was chasing Damek home either,” owner-trainer Butch Deverell explained this week.

“She is a very fast bitch and a noted front-runner, if she leads she takes plenty of running down irrespective of the company,” he added.

Deverell will continue to campaign the bitch in Tasmania in the short-term, however a Melbourne campaign is on the cards if she holds her form.

Another Deverell kennel occupant to score at the Tote Racing Centre on Monday night was the well related Victorian bred bitch Aisha’s Spell ( Bombastic Shiraz – Aisha Magic), which atoned for several recent minor placings to also score impressively.

She has now won six of 25 lifetime starts and stakes of in excess of $9,000, but her future lies in the breeding barn.

“Aisha’s Spell was bred by the Westerveld family in Victoria and purchased from them by Brian and Justin Crawford,” Deverell explained.

“She has now won six races in Tasmania and will eventually be mated with the Crawford’s stud-dog Big Moose.”

It has been well documented that Big Moose, a son of Collide, won 50 of 87 lifetime outings and stakes of $172,000 for the Crawford’s during a highly successful racing career.

Veteran northern owner-trainer Ted Howard is handling Big Moose’s first litter at the moment and reports are that they are displaying early promise.

“The pups are 14-months old and Ted is breaking them in at the moment. I believe he is very happy with them,” Deverell explained.

Meanwhile top matron Copper Delight, a daughter of the Launceston Cup winning bitch Two Codes, has presented Deverell with a litter of nine pups by the champion Knocka Norris, a son of Elite State.

“It will be Copper Delight’s last litter, but I think they are the best pups that I have ever had,” he explained.

“The progeny of Knocka Norris are winning all over Australia at the moment so I am hoping that there will be some winners amongst them.”
